    Noisy FX5

Have you inspected the impeller shaft? I find that's usually the problem when an aquaclear hob gets noisy; the impeller looks fine inside and out but the shaft is worn down, and it runs off-center. If the impeller shaft is intact make sure the impeller itself isn't worn on the inside. The...

    Permantly Attaching Floating Fake Plants

Want some duckweed? If you have any sort of light on the tank it will grow, only hangup is the tendency to clog filter intakes. I use sponge prefilters to get around that issue. Cichlids and silver dollars do tend to eat it though...

    The Ebay Sniper strikes again!

Not if it doesn't work, or needs a couple expensive replacement parts. I like Eheim canisters, but I'm not sold on the pro3 series.

    The Ebay Sniper strikes again!

I've sniped several of that seller's auctions; he sells a lot of store returns, often used and/or damaged items. I got an aquaclear 110 powerhead for less than $15 last year. I think he was ticked off about the selling price though, just dropped it into a box w/out any packing and shipped it...

Well, it is about time to set this tank up...

One good thing about eheims, the water goes through the media before it reaches the impeller. Even if a bit of sand does get sucked up it won't reach the impeller, unlike hob filters that will quickly be ruined by sand. I use sponge covers on all my filter intakes, though mainly to keep duckweed...

    125 mattenfilter?

When I get around to setting up the 125 I've been debating between a mattenfilter or a sump. Aside from the filter media being located either inside the tank or in a separate container (would a glass tank or a storage tote be preferable?) what other considerations do I need to look at? I'm...

    Getting Back into Cichlids

I have loads of Australoheros oblongum juvies available, and one curviceps that's been around for over a year now. Daddy oblongum, maxed out at 5": Little momma, about 4": Juvies: I also have too many breeding pairs of Cryptoheros cutteri on hand.

    40 breeder glass lid

I get 3/16" glass cut to size and buy the hinge/splash guard strip from the lfs. A ceramic knob or drawer pull epoxied in the center of the front for a handle...

    AC 110 Filter Questions

I've found that the replacement prefilter sponges for penguin reverse-flow powerhead setups work best for aquaclear intake covers. I tried finer-pore sponges but they clogged up too quickly, and greatly reduced the flow rate through the filters. They also fit very nicely in the quickfilter housings.

    Visi-Therm Stealth 'sploded!

I tossed an old-style stealth in the trash can last week. The tank temp was low (around 60 being in the basement) so I turned the heater up a bit. Checked t again the next day and the temp was still low, and I got a somewhat painful shock from the tank water. That heater was bought used several...

    Big Surprise...

Put 'em in a breeding setup with plenty of guppies, they'll eat like pigs and spawn again in no time.

    Big Surprise...

That's not too surprising, typus are strictly nocturnal. The comp's likely weren't awake when they would have been out roaming around the tank. I love catfish almost as much as cichlids, it's just a shame most are seldom seen. If I remember correctly the typus are biparental mouthbrooders, so...

    Big Surprise...

Always a nice surprise to find new fry. Are their chances of growing out safely good? I've found 2 Synodontis multi fry and several eureka red babies hiding among the rocks in a 75, and several female ruby red peacocks in another 75 are holding. I figure if they survive on their own they've...

Discussion: Canister Filters Pro & Con

I use the replacement prefilters for penguin reverse-flow powerheads on all my hob and canister filter intakes. The foam is coarse enough that it doesn't clog up too quickly, though it does slow down the flow rate a bit by the time I do the weekly cleanings in my overcrowded tanks.

Sept, Fish Auction what are you bringing?

I do have 3 good-size polleni juvies (3") on hand, had 4 but one got wiped out a couple weeks ago. I presume that means they're maturing now... Here's a couple pics of the fire red BN, adult male and juvies: Not looking to trade, I really need to reduce my stock a bit. I have L-333's...

Sept, Fish Auction what are you bringing?

I have pure endler's livebearers available if you want some of those instead of guppies. No longer overloaded with them since the Carapo knife thinned them out, but a decent breeding stock still remains. I have waaay too many cutteri juvies that will be pairing off soon, and loads of oblongum...

Replacing Center Brace on a 55G

I used acrylic hex rod and 2-part epoxy to repair my 55 after the 2nd top frame center brace gave out. If you want a piece of the hex rod I need the exact inside measurement to cut it to fit.

    Trimming Tank Plastic Trim

Plastic canvas works very nicely for that purpose. It also diffuses the current; I was having trouble with frogbit because the flow from the 110 kept piling it up under the surface.
