    BN Pleco genetics question

As far as I know albino's don't have any pigment, particularly in their eyes. There are also various amelanistic traits, but those individuals do have pigment in the eyes. I've never seen a calico or super red without brown eyes. I have some super red juvies from the browns that don't show any...

    BN Pleco genetics question

There's no such thing as an albino calico or albino super red. Albino's don't have any pigment, calico's have more red/less brown in varying proportions than regular browns, and super reds have very little to no brown pigment. All the various variants are coming from the same parents, and there...

    BN Pleco genetics question

I had a trio of browns a couple years ago that produced about 25% albino fry. Some of their brown offspring have now grown out and are spawning. They're producing some albino, calico, and super red fry.

    Substrate

If you want a black substrate Tractor Supply sells Black Diamond blasting grit for $8/50 lb bag. It's actually coal slag, completely inert, looks and acts like sand but no silica so no daitom bloom when you put it into the tank. I put 100 lbs of it into my 220 a couple months ago, love it so far.

"Monster of a Tank give away #2

I haven't missed a meeting all year, but I didn't remember to make sure I was on the list for the drawing.

    Heater reccomendations?

Mine too, I recently bought a 1500 watt space heater that's supposed to be able to heat an area the size of my basement. It's been working so far, maintaining 72 degrees rather than the usual 65 or lower in cold weather, but it remains to be seen how well it will work in January. It's facing...

    Heater reccomendations?

I have a bunch of stealth heaters, even an unused/NIB Pro kicking around I need to exchange. A couple of the older type stealths are still working alright, a couple have either cooked a tank or mysteriously leak electricity into the water. Never would have noticed the latter if it wasn't for a...

    Brussels sprout for pleco food?

I'm with the young 'uns and the fish on that one, romaine is waay better eating than pygmy cabbages. I feed canned green beans to my fish. I have BN in just about every tank, and most of the cichlids and silver dollars grab some too. Even the kubotai botia's eat them, rather surprisingly.

    Dan from California Blackworms

Not as convenient as the worm keepers, but wet paper towels in a bowl work well too.

    Larger Cave

Should work fine for them. Many years ago when I had 2 young pairs I used a couple of large plastic drinking cups for spawning caves. Nic's are unusual, their eggs aren't adhesive like most. The cups were slightly tilted, and it was easy to see the pile of eggs at the bottom. Excellent parents...

    Bristlenose breeding

Several females will spawn with one male, though I wouldn't recommend more than 2 or the male will never get a break.

    Bristlenose breeding

I use a 30L and a 40 breeder to spawn/raise mine. The super reds are in the 30L with a group of 6 L-333's and dozens-hundreds of endler's, mostly fry. The 40 breeder houses at least 5-6 adult BN and 15 L-134's. I usually grow the BN out to at least 1" before moving to other tanks for further...

    Redoing my first 120 ramble

And I recall you expressing doubts about being able to breed them. Soon enough you'll want them to stop... ;) Plants look great, almost makes me want to do a nice planted tank, but I have enough to do keeping up with the fish. Rather be a lazy slob and enjoy the great pics of someone else's...

    Carib Sea Substrate??

What I don't quite understand is why aragonite will buffer the pH higher than coral. They're both calcium carbonate, but coral only buffers to 7.6 max. In any case baking soda will also max out at 8.2 regardless of how much you use, though adding more will raise the KH level higher, which makes...

    Carib Sea Substrate??

I can't find any info online regarding the actual content of carib sea cichlid sand, specifically the sahara mix. What specific water chemistry does it create/maintain? I'm thinking about getting some featherfins that have been bred/raised in a tank with that substrate. I simply use coral to...

What are you bringing for auction to the Sept meeting?

I have one big adult williamsi I'd like to rehome, and probably a bag of young adult brown BN females. I have too many of them, way more females than males. They produce some albino and calico fry, and I've even found a handful of super red fry among their offspring.

My big ABN may be having a problem

Kosher salt and epsom salt are ENTIRELY different things. Epsom salt is useful for raising the gH; kosher salt is essentially rock salt, not good for pleco's in general.
