My DIY Sump and Wet Dry Filter (reprinted from The Biotope)

We also need to plumb the top of the tower for the water inlet. Most overflows are fitted so that they will attach to 1” PVC pipe. We will need the pipe ($3 for ten feet) a 90 degree threaded elbow($1.29), female PVC nut ($0.35) and a gasket($1). Shopping for the plumbing parts is the single...

My DIY Sump and Wet Dry Filter (reprinted from The Biotope)

In addition to the flow holes, I built in some safety drains for the top two levels. Because you will be pumping several hundred gallons of water per hour through your system, you want to have multiple failsafe systems in case something clogs or the power goes out. Although we all try to do...

My DIY Sump and Wet Dry Filter (reprinted from The Biotope)

To get the filter tower ready for media, we have to cut holes in the bottoms of the drawers so that the water can enter from the top, flow through the media at each level in the tower, then into the sump where it is pumped back into the display tank. A drill or Dremel type rotary tool is good...

My DIY Sump and Wet Dry Filter (reprinted from The Biotope)

The Filter Tower Wet-dry or trickle filters work on the principle of circulating the tank water over media with a large surface area where it is exposed to air and water, comprising a very effective environment for the bacteria that convert fish waste into nitrite and nitrate. Since our...

My DIY Sump and Wet Dry Filter (reprinted from The Biotope)

The Sump A sump is merely a container for holding water that is separate from the main display tank and connected through a drain and return system. The drain can be drilled and plumbed into the display tank, or it can be a hang-on siphon driven device. Drains and siphons are...

My Do-it-Yourself Sump and Wet-Dry Filter by Charlie Campisi If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. - Dads everywhere Why DIY? Most of us started in this hobby with a single ten gallon tank. The first day we got that tank set up...

Bubbles are finer in SW. Look at the airstones in your LFS in the SW tanks and the FW ones. :)

    wet dry filtration

Protein skimmers don't work well in a FW setup and they aren't typically necessary. The bubbles produced in FW are not as fine as in SW, so you don't get a good bubble column to skim the sludge. They also aren't as necessary as FW fish by and large are not as susceptible to harm from nitrate...

    Dues / Renewal

It's against the paypal user agreement to charge a fee to a customer for using paypal. A switch to paypal wouldn't affect me as it's no trouble for me to hit an ATM before the January meeting. They usually have twenty-dollar bills in there. :) I just mention it as an fyi. The loophole around...

    wet dry filtration

Welcome to the Club! I've been using them for years and have built several. I wrote a long article for The Biotope a couple years ago that gave step by step instructions and a price list. Pat may be able to get you a copy or I can see if I can find mine. I might even have the article saved...

March Meeting Of The Cca: Items people are bringing for mini-auction

I'm bringing the stand I built last month and the canopy. It will fit a 20 long or 29 on top, and a 20 high or 15g on the bottom. Club donation. If anyone has tanks that size laying around, it would be a good time to get a member a full set up.

    Span Lengths In Stand Constuction

Yup, that's right Bobby. The 2x rule is just an easy way to remember what you need for larger tanks. If you were doing a rack of smaller tanks, the parameters change.

    Span Lengths In Stand Constuction

In my presentation on standbuilding at February’s meeting, I forgot to cover one thing I had in my notes – span lengths. The stand I built at the meeting was the first small tank stand I’ve done. Usually, I build stands for larger tanks, 4-8 footers, or multi-tank ranks. For those...
