Thanks Bro! I'm not a good photographer and that foai is impossible to shoot. You should see him in person. The vents in the drain just allow air to get in there. I think it helps to keep the water moving and not clog, get stagnant, etc. There aren't any moving parts. Just a vent.

Depends on the gunk load in the tank. When the sponges start to clog, they overflow over the end of the filter box where the inlet tube connects. Once you see water flowing through there, you know it is bypassing the sponge and it's time to clean. I'm less careful with my filter pads then...

Tony - If you have your filter level (using the leveler tab at the bottom) there should be no danger of water spilling out the back. As someone else said, when the water starts bypassing the clogged sponge, it will spill back into the tank on top of the uplift tube. :happy0180:
