Tough game. Look at the stats and how many times Belgium had shots on goal. Incredible they did not score at least 6.
possession of the ball is listed as 50% for USA. hard to believe. I saw Belgium in control most of the time. shots on target 18 for Belgium and 5 for USA.
Good effort for USA. I wish Green had gone in sooner.

I can use a couple of days to rest and prepare for the next phase. :)
The Brazil-Colombia game is going to be amazing. Colombia can do it!!!

It was 2-1, but game should have ended like 4-0 Belgium in regulation. We got dominated.

Heartbreaker...but hard to imagine we could go much further if we need Howard to make 16 saves in a match. Still a great WC for the US!

Yea just saw the last part it was insane...Swiss off the post with 2min left in overtime but no rebuttal. Congrats!
As for Messi he hasn't played all that well lately...:(

it took me about 20 minutes after the game to breath properly!!!! Here is something, did you notice many moments where Messi had the space to hold the ball forward and the such? They did an excellent job at not letting the players play comfortably. I believe their strategy was to protect their are and if the opportunity came up to try and score, otherwise to the penalty shots!

Soooooooooo sad that USA did not make it :( I was doing my midterm with the computer on and watching the score board :D

Its all Klinsmann fault! Should have never left Donovan. They needed a creator in the middle, they played with 3-4 defensive mids, and they never had any sense of attack. When they did triangulate the ball, it was when they looked dangerous and scored most of the goals. And please if you take Bradley to the World cup he can not be the midfielder leading the attack! He is a great ball winner and that's about it! So very, very, VERY disappointed with this team. They looked weaker than Mexico and Costa Rica and quite honestly got through the group stage on pure luck!. I really thought that if they played like they did against Portugal they could have beaten Belgium and had a great chance to beat Argentina and make semis.

This has everything to do with the opponent. US played well against Portugal because Portugal is not good. Remember Germany scored 4 goals against Portugal. Belgium was a far superior team than US and the reason why US didn't play well against Belgium was largely because Belgium didn't let us. As you said, we were lucky to advance out of the group stage. We got thoroughly dominated by Ghana but got a lucky win.

you are right, Portugal is not that good but Belgium is no world beater. Argentina Depends too much on Messi and if they are not careful Belgium will beat them.

I hate to admit this but I knew we weren't going to win after the first 20 min or so regardless of stats I believe we maintained possession less than 25% of the time
There is no one person to blame, as a team we weren't strong. On multiple occasions I saw a USA team that looked amazing, if we can learn from this and come back strong we might, just might make it.
Ohhh on a side note the younger players on the team did really well. Maybe they want it more????

Belgium looked great against us, but then that may be saying something about how bad we are. Who knows ...

Interesting to experience world cup fever in Europe. We were in Paris the night that Algeria advanced - people in the streets where whooping it up and honking car horns past 2 AM.
We were in Chartres (about 30 miles south and west of Paris) the night France won, and all was quiet. Shows the difference between urban and small town fans I guess.

We happened to be in Spain in 2010 during the last world cup as well. Turns out to be interesting timing I guess. Still getting over jet lag.

I think it also depends on the way the teams play. Argentina has been very lucky to make it so far, not due to players depending on Messi too much (but they do) but due to the other team's strategy.

IMO the US played really well.

I HOPE that Belgium will play, will spread out, and they will step into the field and not stay back protecting their ball-keeper and their goal... I am extremely nervous, as we all are (argentinians) because that technique makes it difficult to score but easy to be scored on. (makes sense?) I mean, most of the game can not be 10 guys on their own side keeping the players from kicking the ball................
