Hi everyone,

I live in Kitchener, which is in Southern Ontario Canada, about 100 kilometers west of Toronto.

I have been keeping tropical fish on and off since I was 12, but I really stepped up my commitment after joining the Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society in 2002.

I have 9 aquariums with African and South American cichlids, characins, cyprinids, rainbows, corys and loaches.

So what cichlids are popular in the DC area ?

A couple of years ago, a breeder from your area, Discus Hans, came here to our annual convention to talk about, what else ? Discus !

In my area, the water is very hard and has a high pH, so African Rift Lake cichlids are very popular.
With some modification of the water parameters, many here are able to keep and breed Discus, Severums, Angels, Acaras, and a variety of Central American cichlids :)

Welcome, Zenin! Hans is great, glad you had a chance to hear him talk. In the cichlid area, I keep Mbuna, Peacocks, Apistos, Rams, Discus, Hemichromis guttatus, and Nannacara anomala. But I also have community tanks with rainbows, Pearl Gouramis, danios, tetras, killifish, and more.

Hemichromis guttatus, and Nannacara anomala
Thanks for the welcome :)

The Hemichromis guttatus is beautiful cichlid but very aggressive, I have not kept them yet, but they are on my futures list.
The Nannacara anomala dwarf cichlid is very peaceful but I would need rain water and lots of leaf litter to keep them, maybe some day ;)

Zenin! Welcome to the forum! I keep cichlids from Lake Tanganykia. Feel free to ship us some Labatt Blue and Molson XXX. I'm originally from Niagara Falls. I miss the beer, and the wings.

Thanks for the welcome
I have kept various Julies and Leleupi in the past, but now that tank has Orange Chromides.

Speaking of beer, here in Waterloo Region, we have the Brick brewery that produces very fine products :happy0180:
Lately, I have been enjoying some Sleeman Ale, all the way from Guelph :D (50km or 30mi away)

Sleeman is pretty good. But they don't ship that down here. We even get the sissy version of Mike's hard lemonade with only 5% alcohol.

And someone needs to open a Tim Horton's down here....
