My buddy has a 40gallon tank stocked with 11 tropical community fish filled with well water kept at 72 degrees lit by a basic strip light over the glass top. The tank was cycled and has been operational for two months now. He assures me that the filter is adequate for up to a 60 gallon tank...

2 free Crossocheilus siamensis - Siamese algae eaters

Feel compelled to re-gift these. Peter (rsretep) gave then to me a few months back, and while they're cool they just don't really fit in with my S. American species. Are very healthy and energetic, and play well with others (currently with juvenile discus, adult keyhole cichlids and a mob of...

Brown algae - what's that about?

Have a recently set up 29 with a couple of 20W grow-lights, and there's brown alage on pretty much everything but the two angelfish. Only tank I've ever set up with plant substrate (aquarium plants co.) and its the only one I've ever seen 'bloom' like this. Too much phosphorus or some other...

    Algae in JD tank

I have an algae problem in my JD's tank. I've been wiping/scraping it off the front of the tank but within a couple of days there's a huge amount again. My JD is under 2" currently. Is there anything I can safely put in there to eat the algae? I was thinking about a larger snail or something. It...

    Algae control in mbuna tanks

In my 65g mbuna tank I had been keeping a 12"+ common pleco, but the mbuna weren't very nice to him, so I moved him to our 90g planted discus tank, which he loves. Surprise, surprise, I've since had an outbreack of powdery brown algae all over the glass and rocks. It is easily scraped off the...

    Stupid Algae....

I'm having a bit of trouble with green algae in my breeder tanks. My other tanks are so inundated with anubias that I couldn't help but throw a plant in each of the 10 (relatively) newly setup tanks I have in my workshop. Between the plants and the gravel I used to "seed" each tank, I think I...
