Wow. Did not expect 3 pages of responses to my question, but I also see I missed out on getting the sand. Thanks for the link to the supplier in baltimore. I called and they said the prices were as follows:

T grade: 36.42 + tax
S grade: 30.35 + tax

Does anyone have recommendations on which grade to use? Is the S too fine?

I have the finer of the two grades which I think was the S grade and I have no problems with it. I've heard people say they preferred the courser grade but I can't make a comparison. No complaints with the fine stuff tho as it settles soooo fast, much faster than sand. ;)

MAB has a pretty good deal as well !! 22.00 or so... for 50 lbs. That is only 2 bucks more guys !! A least I think that is what he charges.

The only thing I notice is you can vac the T grade better without it being sucked up the python.

I can't get 3M Colorquartz for 40 cents a pound at wholesale in the metro DC area - so if you can get it from Baltimore that cheap I suggest you go for it.

The bags from my source BTW are 50lbs.

How much can you get it for?

So it sounds like the T grade does look like sand? The woman I spoke with on the phone said it isn't quite sand but it isn't quite small gravel either.

The "T" grade does NOT look like sand in a tank. It looks like small gravel, but more like "pieces" than "pebbles" if that makes any sense at all :) . It has a very uniform size. Maybe the lady you talked to was describing it as a person normally would--standing over and looking at it on the ground. I have the "T" grade in two 40 Bdr tanks...

NOTE: for gravel it is fairly lightweight. If you have diggers/kickers it is easy for them to move around. Us planted folks like it because it holds on to nutrients unlike regular gravel, so plants grow better in it (and at a fraction of the cost of "planted tank" substrate) and it is easy to plant in. The only complaint I have is somehow I wound up with "Charcoal" colored stuff, and I wish it was black like I was expecting. Otherwise I recommend it to other people. We get in on the group orders from Michael (mab) at least once a year, he's a good source and I believe he is literally right now working on an order for some PVAS people.

Hope this helps!

Very helpful.

But you're saying it's actually a dark gray and not black??

Also, sounds like T grade is better for plants, but since the S grade is not too fine (e.g. shouldn't clog filters) it's better if the goals are sand for shelldwellers to move around and to prevent debris from going in and below the substrate so that cleaning is much easier.

I love the T grade and I feel like once in the tank it looks like sand. Out of water it def doesnt. But thats just me.

I looked through some pictures of tanks on cichlid forum and as best I can tell the S grade looks black while the T grade looks "charcoal" as described above.

So if the S grade isn't so light as to make a mess like some pool filter sands do in a tank, it sounds like for what I'm going for the S grade is the way to go.

the stuff I get is black.

I'm not 100% on the grade... let me find a pic of it with some fish in a tank.

this is the only shot I can find of it....

It's jet black.... without the white coral that is shown in the pic.
