Wow, a fish I don't even know the name of for sure has spawned - the spawn hatched - the female is guarding them like nobodies biz - they are eating - still alive (3 or 4 days) (at least) - pics to follow - soon!!!

Dad's number two attempt at using my camera. He is old fashioned when it comes to cameras.... Really back in the stone ages!!!!! (You know..... actual FILM!!!!! developed and printed in his OWN dark room!!!!!)

The first pic is of momma right after she finished spawning (dark tank, and had to use flash.... but its my photo)

The second photo is taken by him (after moving in another light). I"ll try to get some better later tonight for BAP purposes. But he is rather posessive of this spawn and insisted on taking the first pics himself......

In addition to the "Name the Species" award;

A "Whose The Daddy" contest will be initiated.

a) Pics of all potential 'daddies' will be posted (good pics!!!!)

b) As the fry develop y'all will be able to try your hands (and eyes) at phenotype trait marking. The winner will be announced
after enough development has occurred to make these comparisons valid.

c) The winner will be determined at the sole discretion of the owner (me) or via a poll. The prize will be a fish that is on the
current ACA C.A.R.E.S. list !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notes Of Importance:

The following persons are forbidden from the contest (or even dreaming about it):
- JustRon
- Longstocking

GOOD LUCK & DON'T FORGET

Paul, you'd better have some BBS cooking or they won't be around much longer babe! Or daphnia -- gotta be something REALLY small though!

Never tried egg yolk, Paul. Is it just crumbled up hard boiled yolks?
Do you have any problem with it fouling the water quickly, or does it seem to hold up pretty well? Anyone else use it ?

egg yolk + decaps + cyclopezee

works great!!

Paul.[/b]

I've used egg yolk for tetra and white cloud fry. I wraped a small amount in a white hankercheif and swished it around the floating wysteria on the surface. The minscule particles stay along the edges of the plants where the fry hung out.

The fish in the picture above look like a port cichlid, Aequidens portalagrensis: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=2344

Cichlasoma sp. araguaiense is both underscribed and really rare, so probably not my first guess.

Ports are really closely related to other Port-type Aequidens and "Cichlasoma" so you could have a "successful" spawn with a female port and lots of possible fathers. I seem to remember having a male port and a female sajica breed a few times in a cichlid community tank back in the day.

DC: Delivered the mix in small & frequent doses directly into the pit where the female was guarding - no apparent fouling but I'll be checking water parameters today and it's water change time anyway. Also, the other fish in the tank Really want to get past the egg crate barrier - so they will get split up later today/night. (raw organic egg yolk)

Sarah: OK, go ahead and guess!!!!

dogofwar: Cichlasoma sp. araguaiense was actually a real good guess, and they are around, but this species gets Really big - daddy is a monster - the female is still young, hence the small spawn, but Great parenting skills!

As I separate out the fish into new tanks I'll try some more of that new fangled digital imitation photography - I have small tanks painted on three sides and I'll mark the tank at one inch increments.

How about deleting Franny's name and putting mine in instead for that last answer lol.
I think it's probably a Cichlasoma but it's hard to find ID photo's

Cichlasoma is supposed to be correct - and considering the source - is probably right (unless I got some names mixed up; will check with the higher power).

Hint: being able to read Spanish/Portuguese might help with an ID.
