Python water changer-slow?

Greater hose diameter will also greatly increase flow (drain) rate...

I use a 1" inside diameter hose with a PVC "U" (to hang on the side of the tank) to drain tanks on the top 2 rows of my fishroom...

Have to add fluid hydraulics to the list of finatic/aquanut specializations....

The greater the vertical drop between siphon inflow and outflow, the faster the transfer/drain rate, presumably because gravity acts on the water in the tubing accelerating its movement and hence the flow rate, as one does not achieve the same rate with a shorter length of tubing that releases the water sooner. Probably an upper limit for this that corresponds to the maximum velocity of objects acted upon by gravity, but the bottom line is that if one dangles 20 feet of tubing out a window as opposed to just enough to clear the sill, the flow rate increases dramatically.

Wasting fresh water on maintaining a siphon is inane - multi-tasking is a much better option.

I do essentially what Pat does. I use a Mag 9 (?). Could probably go faster with a larger pump, but it not being a giant one still allows me to use it on the small tanks.

Refills are done without the Python "pump" as well.

Only use the pump for isolated smaller tanks upstairs or when trying to suck up poop from tanks on the floor in the basement fishroom. Poop removal from tanks not on the floor is done via syphon into my rain gutter system that goes into my sump.

Thanks guys! I noticed pythons suck up slower than those siphons with pump from the fish stores..so I tend to use the pythons for smaller tanks too..on the six footer it takes longer..should probably get a battery powered vacuum..

No, you want a submersible pump or a power head.

thanks! that is some thought for me to do.. what size pump did you get? what is the GPH rate?

Been a couple years. I believe its around 1800 gph. I got the one without the auto cut off. Had one of those before and did not like it. Kept shutting off on me while draining.
I checked Home Depot and Lowes. Lowes (at that time) had the best price on the most gph.
I got the biggest I could get without looking like a sump pump and still having the attachment for a hose.
