paranoia?

I have a very nice center peice for my 29 gallon.. however, it was wood that was screwed I to a peice of slate. Screw was pretty nasty lookin/rusty. This was bought used from somebody who had all terrariums. I took the screw out and dug into the wood with a knife to kind of remove any wood that surrounded the screw. Is this risky to put in my tank or am I just being overly paranoid? Any thoughts are welcome :)

Sort of related - if I wanted to mount a piece of wood on a slate because the dang thing won't sink, what type of screw is safe to use?

Figured I'd tackle that first before figuring out how the heck I get a hole in a piece of slate without shattering it.

Interesting. I didn't know any were safe to use. Becca you can have the peice of slate I took it off of if you'd like :) already has a hole so no extra work!

Any screw will really work. Most are steel or iron... what's a little iron in the tank gonna do? Make your plants grow more? :-D

I rubber band pieces to big chunks of rock ... rubber band breaks down in a few months, and by then the piece is water logged.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about a single screw rusting out. An interesting idea I got from the Poret foam guy was to stable plants to the foam as a covering for the foam. By the time the stable rust away into nothing the plants will have rooted into the foam.
