Hi!

What other interests do people have besides fish?

I personally own a horse who I do not get to ride anywhere near as often as I want (transportation and time issues). :sad0121:

I am also an avid Science Fiction and Fantasy reader with a strong liking for books where the dragons are the good guys :character0051: . Of course, like with the horse, I don't have anywhere near as much time to do this as I want.

I've got essentially no time these days, what with grad school, being a Teaching Assistant, doing research, and working 3 full days a week :mad0259: . I consider myself lucky that I have not had to sell my horse when I entered college, as many people have had to do.

So what does everyone else here do besides fish?

Amanda.

Hi! Just got back from a very interesting wine tasting at the Chesapeake Wine Co. in Canton. 8 wines, great cheeses and tapenade. They do this every Tuesday..... I only wish I could go that often. Next Tuesday they are featuring French wines and the following Tuesday wines from Italy. The owner, Mitchel, has a phenomenal amount of knowledge about wines. His first question though is, 'What do you think about this wine?' He never tells you what you should taste - or like - in a wine. Great wines, good company. They were featured in Baltimore Magazine recently as the 'Best Wine Tasting'.

Yummy Wine !!!!

I don't really go to wine tastings any more but I used to run some when I lived in North Carolina. It's a blast ! Now I just have a hobby of drinking it :happy0180:

Other hobbies ... well duh, SCUBA !!!!! Love it love it love it ! I go almost every weekend and can't get enough of feeling like i'm floating with the fish !

I also bowl. I got involved with it becuase Bill wanted to. I didn't really want to... but I figured I could meet people bowling. Boy I was wrong !!! Haven't met a single person I would hang out with :( But I do enjoy it.... and it has helped strengthen my lower back ! No more back problems!

I'm always on boat as well... love it.

Love to cook ! not just throw it on the dinner plate type of cooking. All night type of cooking. Hate to bake though !

I read as well... recently just scuba books LOL.

I also paint/ draw occassionally... not very good but it relaxes me.

I have a million hobbies. Jack of all hobbies, master of none.

Flyfishing/flytying. Love the trout streams around here. Also fish on the bay at least once a year.
Softball. Play about 100 games a year.
Cars. I have a 20 year old corvette convertible that is in rough shape that is waiting for me to save her.
Home theater. I love movies and am constantly tweaking my setup. Hope to exchange my 57" rear projection for a 110" front projector in the next few months.
Homebrewing beer. Haven't done it in a while, but it is a fun hobby, not too time consuming and will even save you a few bucks for good beer.
Poker. I love poker strategy and am constantly reading and practicing. I am just a little bit competitive. :D
I enjoy building things and built my own fish tank stands, canopies, filters and also built an 8 man octagon poker table.
Lastly, I am a sports nut. Yankees, NY Giants, Boston College. Can't get enough sports. Last weekend I was able to combine my sports fanaticism with the home theater hobby -- went to the Ravens game and successfully set up a directv system in the parking lot. Nothing like watching 8 games at once on a beautiful day while cooking meat over a fire and having an adult beverage or two. :happy0180:

I love to hunt! Go to North Dakota every year. Going to Mexico in February. Been to Texas several times. Went to Canada last year. Going on an African safari sometime in the next 5 years.
I love to fish! Go offshore fishing at the Outer Banks at least once a year. Go out on the Chesapeake Bay several times a year.
I have a couple old muscle cars that I have been neglecting. Really need to get them out on the road again.
Photography - Bobby gave me the push I needed to start taking photos of my fish and it has snowballed from there. I take pics of everything (most are horrible, but every now and then I get a nice one).
I really enjoy doing stuff with the club (CCA), most of the time I find it very relaxing.

I do all of the above to keep me sane! My job can be a pressure cooker at times!

I like long walks on the beach and movies that are sensitive towards....... Ooops, that's not me.... :D

When I have time for hobbies, I like photography, diving, programming, backpacking and reading. (Also fantasy/sci-fi).
Right now however, it's bowhunting season in CT. Besides a quick backpacking trip to the White Mountains this weekend, there'll be time for little else until the end of December. (Maybe I'll mix photography in with the bow and rifles and just take pictures of some of them. )

Hmmm. Well, until I get my surgery done, I've really not been doing many of the hobbies that I normally would - which BITES, because now I have all the time in the world to DO them, and just can't! I hate it when that happens!
BUT - If drinking coffee, reading, and walking the dog can be considered Hobbies, then I'm all over it :happy0007:

Amanda, where do you board your horse? I used to ride pretty frequently, but haven't now for a few years. I have no idea where to go for rides around here.

Sarah - you crack me up - BOWLING!! I guess we know who to thank for corrupting you with that one! LOL - now -- if you start giving up snorkling trips to the Bahamas in order to go to Cranberry Festivals & Milwaukee's Octoberfest, then I'll REALLY start worrying!

lol it's funny you say that Donna... he's been trying to get me to go to Octoberfest for a couple years now. He's told me about the one in Germany and the one in Milwaukee. I keep telling him... ok I'll go to the one in Germany with you LOLOL.

Now we can't be mad at Bill for corrupting me to bowl. As if we were .. we would have never found that FANTASTIC restaurant !

I read and collect science fiction and fantasy, got hooked in grade school (about the same time I got hooked on cichlids). Use to love riding horses (not allowed any more because of my back :smashfreakB: ), all types of fishing (again the back :angry3: ) rock climbing and repelling (OK now I'm getting depressed) nothing like jumping off a mountain with only a rope to keep you from smashing into the ground, what a rush! All types of martial arts :fighting0032: , who would of guessed that I like fighting
I don't think I like this subject any more! :sad0017:

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I changed this thread from a "WINE-ing" Thread to a "WHINE-ing" thread!

Sorry 'bout that! :smashfreakB: :smashfreakB: :smashfreakB:

I was trying to find a story that I saw online about a new Nintendo or PS game that was Wine-Tasting. I'll have to see if I can find the story, because for the life of me I can't figure out how you can have a wine-tasting game without WINE

Let's get back to the interesting stuff & try to figure out why Mike never takes off his socks, shall we? :character0272:

I guess most of my hobbies have gone by the wayside over the last few years.

1) Photography- I still take a few pictures now and then even though I quick the band.

2) Used to build and fly remote controlled air planes. Then the company I worked for went out of business, could no longer afford that one. My son and I have been discussing starting that again.

3) Used to rebuild mustangs. - Then got married-

4) Enjoyed little league baseball and high school basketball with my kids. They grew up.

5) Used to enjoy target shooting. Got out when I left MSP.

6) Used to do long distance racing on a Hobbie Cat. Got too old and fat.

Not much left these days. :confused0024: :sad0121: :sick0004: I think this one describes my attitude lately. :sick0019:

But I do enjoy riding and working on my classic motorcycle.

It is refreshing to know that I am not the only one who has a wide array of hobbies! Mine are as follows:

1. Fish - cichlids, of course! It all seriously started years ago when I begged my mom to bid on a 10 gal. set up at a silent auction at my old grade school. I still have the tank and it has a group of kribs swimmin' around in it!
2. Playing the guitar. I have 5 guitars (3 6-string acoustics, 1 12-string acoustic and 1 electric). I have to admit that I only play one of them for the majority of the time that I feel like jammin'. I used to play a lot more but over the years I have found myself with less and less time to devote to it. ...anyone interested in buying some of the other slightly used guitars??
3. Reading. I'm always reading. 9 out of 10 books I'm reading have to do with investing and trading. The other 1 out of 10? Pirates. Why? I don't know. I have always simply been facisnated by pirate history and, hey! if anything else, it gives me a break from reading the sometimes drab finance reading!
4. Photography. I've always loved it but bought a nice SLR camera about 2 years ago and the love affair with photography really took off!
5. Running and working out. Is it a hobby or a demand from my physician? Dunno but I enjoy staying in shape! I was an athlete all of my life and played lacrosse in college.
6. Cooking.
7. Finance, trading, investing. It's my job and I think I ought to be pretty thankful that what I do for a living is a hobby and passion of mine. But as the stock markets go, it isn't ALWAYS a hobby that keeps a smile on my face ;)
8. I have other hobbies and interests like seeing live bands play (concerts, street corner musicians, some guy with an acoustic playing infront of a bar audience, etc.) but I think the main ones were mentioned above. What a great thread!

Since we have so many new people I figured I would bring this one up again.

What other hobbies do you have besides the fish?

Other than fish? Through the years, I've grown more and more interested in keeping fish, not less.

I guess I'm pretty limited. I like to go on collecting trips, which is related to, but not the same as, fish keeping. About 15 or so years ago, I started collecting and got into native fish keeping in a big way. Through the years, I've evolved more toward Tropicals, and lately toward cichlids. (Still have the black banded sunnies, some spotted bullheads and madtoms, and some rosy red feeders.)

I still like collecting a few times a year, but mostly practice catch and release.

I do like to run, even though I'm not really built for it and am pretty slow. In the winter, I run the tread mill six days a week, and in the summer, I run outside in the mornings before I go to work.

I also like to read in the evenings. Lots of political blogs. And, of course, National Geographic. I've read a couple of books by Michael Pollan, who writes about food and the environment.

Bobby - I really like the White Egret (first time I have seen that one)

As if i didn't have enough stuff going on already, I started taking guitar and piano lessons. Put the guitar on hold for a while (a lot harder to play than I thought it would be) but I still play the piano everyday. Never played either before, just decided that it would be fun about 2 months ago. Bought instruments and signed up for lessons.
