L Numbers

OK so I got bored with all the stuff that ISN't coming in from lake tang. So the natural progession is to go to cats

I picked up 4 different L numbers this weekend. All breedable and all stay small !

L333 2 pair
L270 Pair
L260 Trio
L174 Pair

I gotta say the 174 are REALLY cute.... look like zebras but with dots !

Anyone else have some cool L numbers? Obviously I'm just getting into them. Always kinda looked at them... but never took the plunge !

I'm going to see how they do on tap.... if they do bad I'll lower the ph. But, my kh and gh are always between 3 and 5. Ph is a bit high but not bad. After 24 hours it usually sits around 7.2. Keeping them in 20 longs and 30 breeders alone :)

Except for the L174 they are still a bit small for breeding so they went in with the discus.

Bill left the camera here today... so I can take pics. No promises as they are still hiding quite a bit.

That's good news Sarah! Any pictures?

How are you keeping them, tank size, parameters, etc?[/b]

Knowing Sarah as we do... there will be little L numbers coming to the CCA auction soon.
Sooo, we need info on these little guys.
How big do they get?
Do they do well with CA, SA, or African cichlids? Oh, yes, and do the cichlids do well with them?
What about breeding? Will 'L's and cichlids breed in the same tank?

Isn't this fun! We all benefit when Sarah 'branches out'.

Marge

lol Marge... don't talk too soon. I know hard water fish not soft water !

None of the ones I picked up get over 6 inches and are all meat eaters.

I have no idea about breeding these guys with cichlids and I doubt I will ever know  But If I had to take a guess, apistos and small pikes would be good tank mates. Franny?

Apistos hang out in the same strata of the tank and would have problems with the plecos being there. Especially if they spawn in small tank like a 20 long. The two species would also seek out the same type of hiding place. You could see where this would be an issue.

Pikes might work or not. I had about 10 L129 in a 40 breeder and added a pike (dwarf) to the tank. I don't think pikes like plecos. These species also cruise the same area.

In either case, larger tanks might alleviate the problem.

Oh that's another cute one Fran ! And it stays REALLY small !

See Marge I know nothing about keeping plecos with cichlids ! HA HA HA ! Except for Bn's ... which are probably one of the easiest if not THE easiest plecos to spawn.

Julie doesn't do it for the most part either... sometimes with discus, angels and cories.

Franny and Sarah,
You sound to me like you are talking in a secret code: L333 - 270 - 260 - 174- 129!
I don't even know if you have to keep the Little numbers separate from each other to avoid crossbreeding..

It's time for a little research on this one.

Seem okay?

Spend most of the time between the sponge filters and the back glass. I have not actually seen anyone eat either. There is poo laying around from them but have not witnessed any eating. Tried frozen brine. I may just do some frozen blood worms...or run all the way to the beltway and pick up some live black worms.
Just really want to see them eat so I know they are okay? I know I am rambleing...Not sure how to explain my feelings...lol

Maybe they only eat in the dark?

I saw them eat in her tanks so I know they are healthy fish. Remember they are wild fish.... they take a bit more time :) Mine just started to venture out a bit and I saw them eat black worms.

But, she would feed kens crumbles, nls grow and black worms. Remember to keep the oxygen levels up ( I have some pretty strong power heads in my 20 gallons ). If they are showing good constrasting stripes they are doing good. They don't like high light either.

OK that's all I know about cats in 2 sentences LOL Hope that helps ya ROFL.

Oh yeah... they shouldn't eat the plants

Hey Sarah,

My 2 unidentified ones from Julie are in the tank together now. They seem to be ignoring each other, but who knows? Maybe they're just playing 'hard to get'. Hope it turns out being a pair and I also hope that someday, I can get them to breed. It could be a heck of a long time to keep my toes crossed though!~ At this point, one of them seems to be hanging out with the clown loaches.... DOH

Maybe when I move them, I'll try to get pictures of each to compare to each other & make sure they seem to be the same, k?

Who knows what ya got !

Julie doesn't even know and she knows cats pretty darn well ( not very good at sexing thoguh ).

What she suggested to me, post the pictures on planet catfish to see if I have different sexes. You might be able to get an ID as well. I beleive she got those through her Brazilian guy. She taught me a bit about sexing, but I'm no expert from 2 days of information
