Frank's 180G Malawi build

This is just me but I would gravel vac the 90 to empty it to remove as much solid waste as possible from the gravel before transferring it. Its debatable but Imo it would help reduce the possibility of any spikes and make it a lot less messy. Also if your adding extra new substrate put the new stuff down first then the old as a top layer.

I didn't think of this. thanks. To clarify, you mean remove the substrate and rinse it as when rinsing new sand to add to a tank. right?

I wouldn't actually rinse it as in putting it in a strainer because if the tap water isn't the same as the tank water it could harm the BB. Using the gravel vac to clean/rinse the gravel as you are emptying the tank should remove the crud but leave the BB unharmed. It could several hours to a few days for all that crud to clear once the 180 is filled. It will also reduce the risk of an ammonia spike. That crud could be considered good as its food for the BB but if your adding fish and the used canister the fish will produce more food (for the BB) and the canister will also have plenty left over.

I think you should give me the big tanks and focus your energy on the 10 gallon on the sawhorse. Jazz that baby up with a bubbling mermaid and you are all set.

How's the peacock doing? Healing?

Good to know Will. thanks. I expect to keep this guy in the hospital for a while. Yesterday, I fed him 3 1mm pellets and he eat-spit, eat-spit, and finally ate them.
Today, I gave him about 7 pellets and ate them all.

Not sure when you're planning on making the swap, but I'd pull the sponges out of the filter with water in it and float them in a tank until you are ready. Give them a good sniff first... if the canister smells funky, then it has gone anaerobic and died off and you need to figure something else out.

Good luck and enjoy your 180!!!! :happy0180:

Good progress Frank. The one regret that I have about when I set up my 180 is that I didn't take the time to get things spruced up before I set up the tank. I was way too excited to have a big tank and get it filled with water and fish. Now, I'm just too lazy and I don't have anywhere to put the fish in the tank to be able to break it down and start over. Maybe one day when I have a week off from work and nothing to do around the house.

I hear you Jon. I spent some time making the 90g stand look good.
I enjoy doing the work and make use of my tools. :)

I'll do the same with the 180 now because I have no plans or desire to later on move it around for some reason. Too much of a pain.
Once set... it won't move. (I hope).

+1 to Jon's comments.

I did the same when I setup my 150. I have some regrets - hind sight is always 20/20.

Stand is looking great with the upgrades.

Frank,

You'll be ready by the weekend.....

Seriously doubt it. :(
I will have limited time from now to Friday to keep working on it.
I don't want to rush things either.

Do you think I can keep the 2 fronts in the 10g tank for a few days?
