Featherfins Holding

Mike, if you haven't already done some research on breeding featherfins, you should look into stripping. I seem to remember reading a lot of stories of them not holding to term. It's been a week already, so that's a good sign. 2 weeks to go!

I really don't like stripping and I want to let this one run its course since it is the first time for these fish. Besides, I am not looking forward to breaking down that tank just yet. I am getting ready to put 8 - 75's in my fish room (doing away with a lot of the smaller tanks I have in there), I will break down tanks and move fish around once I get that done.

I guess then you could just wait a couple weeks and net her while she's sleeping so you don't have to break the tank down. I've always had to strip because I've never had enough tanks to remove the mothers to. I never bothered with egg tumblers though, so just waited til the fish were held for three weeks and then netted at night. More often then not, they'll spit in the net. Some of the really tenacious moms like fryeri and cyps need some coaxing to spit.

Well it looks like she swallowed the eggs, she is taking food again. The male is constantly trying to breed so hopefully I will not have to wait long for the next batch.

See there? You waited too long to strip. Don't feel bad though, I've always had a problem with stripping too!

Must ... resist ... inappropriate ... comment ... :D

That's too bad Mike. Good luck with the next batch. I'm hopefully going to strip one of my cyps tonight. Mike's loss is pushing me. I've got the lights off, but I'm watching tv in the room near the tank so I don't think they're asleep. The cyps eat while they hold, but I fed some pellet food tonight and for some reason I think that might be more of a problem for the fry.

lol bad bad minds !!!

Sorry to hear she didn't hold ! good call though... as I wouldn't strip the first time either. I hate egg tumblers !!! I strip a bit earlier though... usually around 15 days.

Mike.

from my experience if you strip too early especially with first timers, the fish would just spit it out the tank befor you can catch it, usually after 3 weeks of holding, I would net the fish into a 10 gal tank and let her stay there until the frys are ready or swimming out .

Normally I isolate the female into a smaller tank and let her spit on her own. I usually do this as soon as I see the female holding. The 180 with the featherfins is setup as a community tank and it is much harder to net the fish. I will eventually redocorate this tank and make it easier on myself.
