Featherfins Holding

Noticed a little activity in my 180 today, also noticed my male Cyathopharynx furcifer/foai had black fins. Then I noticed the female holding. This is a 50 point fish!!

My favorite fish in the lake and my group is a ways away from breeding. Where are the pics? At least a pic of the male over his bower...

His bower is 6" across and I don't think they even used it. Pretty sure they used a rock. Even the male is not muct to look at. He has some blue undertones when you take a photo, little bit of yellow and black in the fins. I think he is still young, about 4" long.

I will try for some photos later tonight.

Interesting you say that. I have at least three males in my group. My tank has two sandbeds separated by a large rockpile that is flat-ish on top. The most dominant male has the sandbed to the left. The third male has the sandbed to the right and the second male (though he is the biggest) seems to have claimed the top of the rockpile. None of them have begun to move sand at all, but they are 4", so maybe soon. I think I remember seeing your group at the warehouse (it is the same group, right?) and I thought they were bigger than 4". Anyway, from Jewel of the Rift, the bowers seem to be built of sand on top of rocks, but in the aquarium, you usually see them on the tank floor. I would guess that is because few aquariums are large enough to support a sand bed on top of a rockpile. I love these fish!

OK, you asked for it. Very hard to get pics in my 125 (too many reasons {excuses} to list). Plus this is a hard fish to shoot. Cleaned the shots up very little, so you can probably see the dirty glass.

I was trying different things to see if i could get some breeding activity so it has been about 4 weeks since the last water change. I keep an eye on the pH, looking for it to drop. When it has dropped 1 point (usually from 8.8 to 7.8) I do a change. None of my fish seem stressed with this routine and all my fish seem to breed. I have done weekly changes which keeps the water parameters more constant, but there is less breeding activity.

There was a larger bower cleared out today, maybe 8" across and absolutely spotless. Looks like my guy cleans house after he has done the deed (good boy)!

Female about 4" long

Male close to 6" long (he is bigger than I thought Charlie)
I hope he colors up, you can see where the color wants to come through!

Any chance you can get him flaring in the bower?
These fish turn on and off like a light switch. And they usually switch to "off" when they see you approach the tank. You have such a short window to get them looking good. I guess that's part of what drives the obsession. When mine finally start to breed, I think I'm just going to use the movie camera.

I haven't seen him near the bower! I have hidden on the other side of the room with a long lens trying to catch some color, with no luck. Literally the only color I have noticed is some black in his pelvic fins.

Nice shots Mike. I like the low exposure for these guys (and gal). :winking0011:[/b]

Thanks Bobby. I had to take the exposure down in PS to cut down some of the glare (even had the remote at 1/128). Tough fish to shot, I have been trying off and on for about a month to get anything decent. These are respectable, but not what I was looking for. I posted these just to show the fish.

I hope some of the fry make it though. I have my killies and a small group of neolamps. in there with them. Couple of rock piles to hide in though.

VERY Nice Mike !

Feather fins are stunning and fun to watch. I wish I could keep more of them ! But their need for a 6 foot tank stops me !

I hope she holds !

There are quite a few feather fin, sand sifter fans in the US that want this variant !

Speaking of sifter fans, Ms. Moderator, what's the deal with sifters being characterized as "Tanganyikan Oddities" on the CF proiles? That needs to be changed to Sanddwellers or something more descriptive. Haven't you people heard of PC? :angry3: :tongue0011:

LOL.... I've thought of that too. Just never made the suggestion. Since you agree with me... I'll go ahead and make the suggestion. I might get shot down though... as I can think of a few reasons not to do it. There are quite a few exceptions to what classifies them....

Very Nice Mike !!!

You know.... not to put your fish down. But this shows how hard wild feather fins are. They just don't color up like TR. But.... you are the first to breed these guys ( I think atleast ... I know another guy that has them but I don't think he's bred them yet ) Looking forward to seeing what the fry turn out to look like.

Charles.. I put the request in. No one opposed me :) One person agreed. So we'll see. Lots of new pictures are going to be added to the profiles section soon. We have a new photo editor :) So the profiles should start being worked on. Thank goodness ! Some of the tangs need a lot of work !

With cyathopharynx, it's not a put down. Many fish are described as being to turn their colors on and off like a light switch, but for these guys it's to the extreme. What's more, they are 99% off. Especially if they see you near the tank. It's why they've always been an obsession for me. Mike's fish were in the warehouse for a while and probably forgot what sand looked like! :D Now that they have some of their own space, it'll be interesting to watch them. I'm thinking a movie camera is the only way to really capture them unless you can sneak up on them in the middle of breeding.

Agreed... but you missed my point. Wild feather fins just don't color up the same as tank raised.[/b]

Gotcha.

Robert might be able to chime in since he bred both his wilds and their offspring.

Fish Hater!

She is still holding and he is still trying to breed with her. He chases her around quite a bit! It is cool to watch, he flares and tries to inch closer and closer to his bower (trying to entice her in). An opportunistic Neolamp. keeps trying to claim the bower as his, acts like it is his until the big boy shows back up.
