Hello all,

My name is Drew. I am a new cichlid keeper. I just found this site following someones craigslist post. This started out as something me and my eldest daughter were going to do together... And then I got hooked. (pardon the pun)

I have been into cars, mma, bjj, but nothing like fish keeping. And while my wife likes the pretty fish she definitely thinks I am weird. Cool to know that their are alot of us.

I currently keep a 30 and a 10 gallon mixed SA/CA setup soon to be building a 150 and a 90 probably stacked in my family room. All plumbing to be routed to the basement. Stocked CA int the 150 and SA in the 90.

In the future please excuse my ignorant questions and my overwhelming desire to overstock my tank at a moments notice.

Welcome to the forum! It is always good to have a few more fellow new world keepers around. What do you have in your 10 and 30 currently?

I currently have a multitude. And bought fish having no clue wtf I was doing.

In the 30 I have 2 GTs, 2 JDs, BP, 2 Con pairs,FM, 2 Plecos and 7 Tiger Barbs. Enough?????:eek:


In the 10 I have Gold Sev, Green Sev, 10 Vieja Synpsium juvies, Con babies, and a spotted pleco suprisingly one of the best looking fish I own.

Now that I have got that off my chest and that was tougher than I thought.
... (steps away and prepares flame suit).
As previously stated I have a 150, and a 90 in my garage waiting to be set up. The hold up has been my honey-do list before my third daughter was born. She is here now so I think in a month or so I should be able to get rolling with this project. Hopefully. Right now all of the fish seem to be getting along but they are all babies. And I am well aware that that situation can change in a instant.

Sorry for the long winded reply but I am stoked to be on here and in good company.;)

I'm pretty sure all of us went through the stage of buying every cool fish at the fish store when we first got into the hobby. Glad to see that you have the tanks ready to be set up. I'd get them set up as soon as you can, as it won't take long for you to start losing fish to either aggression or water quality issues.

It sounds like you are well on your way to a case of MTS (multiple tank syndrome). You'll fit right in here at CCA.

You should try to make it to the next meeting in November. There will be a speaker and a mini auction, and it is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow cichlid keepers in the area.

Imagine my dismay when I opened up the world wide web and googled some of my fish and their requirements. Scary realization. 1 day after getting my 30 I told my wife we needed a 200+ gallon set up and she didnt share the same sentiment. She has no clue what I have planned for the basement! Can we say fish room anyone?

Nice to see you are in to new world cichlids. I think you will find everyone is friendly and helpful when you have questions. So ask away. Nothing wrong with being a noob either we've all been there lol. Put up some pics of your tanks and fish. We love pics! Looking forward to chatting/seeing you at the meetings. Oh and jonclark is dead on with getting the other tanks ready.

Welcome aboard Drew. Like the other guys said, no shame in finding cool fish and bringing them home. You have a plan to get them upgraded and that's what's important.

Lots of really good folks here willing to help out with whatever you need. Besides a wealth of information from people who have been keeping these fish for years, there's an abundance of other cool fish (you can't find at the chain stores) as well as used equipment to be found on the cheap.

Finding your local fish club is something that is guaranteed change your whole outlook of fishkeeping. You've found a pretty solid one with the CCA. :happy0144:
