Considering Discus

Now that I'm getting my fishroom finished and all of my tanks moving to racks downstairs, I will be left with a beautiful cabinet grade oak stand and canopy for a 55/40long. I'll definitely keep a show tank or two in the living room and I'm thinkin Discus in one and reef the other one. Since I have both 55 & 40long tanks that will be available to use, would either size be suitable for a Discus setup? I like the shorter 40long and think it would be helpful in growing plants with a not so outrageous lighting rig. First things first, would either of these tanks work? If not, back to the drawing board... If so, which would be best and what would it's capabilities be?

Discus need taller tanks Mikey so in your case I would go with the 55G. Get 6 or so juvies and grow them out THEN scape the tank to your liking. Keep them bare for the first six months or so and feed them 5X a day and do 50%wc's atleast 3X per week.

I agree with Jose. I have 5 comfortably in a 55, but thats the minimum I'd go for long-term housing. Discus are beautiful, you won't regret it.

Tony...

Thanks guys. The first time I looked at fish I wanted Discus, until the owner started telling me what I'd have to do to keep em alive... I then opted for the other fish that had caught my attention, mbuna. I vowed to someday advance to Discus but have went in other directions. Now with a surplus of tankspace it's time. The Reef tank is really a no brainer, they're show stoppers ;) and after all, I'm going to have over a dozen Tang tanks in the fishroom not counting fry tanks so I'll get my daily cichlid fix down there. The goal now is to set up 2 tanks in the living room strictly for show, maybe if I get "pretty" fish the wife will let me claim the big 20'x28 room in the basement for a monster fishroom!!!

Yes, 55G for discus, but 75G or 90G is better. Also, if money is not a huge factor, I would buy adult discus rather than juvies. I would never buy juvies again. Too much work to grow them out and if you don't really stay on top of it, your chances of growing out nice adult discus is not very good. You can buy juvies for $30 ~ $40 dollars (that's a good price), but you can get very nice adults from Hans for $150. That's a bargain. You will spend a lot more money growing the discus out if you start with Juvies. Good luck no matter what you decide to do.

55 gallon for discus! And they are not has hard as they use to be. We just added Discus to our breeding program here at Angelfish USA. Started with just 4 or 5 pairs to test. Now with 16 pairs we are selling a lot of them. Continually upgrading our breeding stock. It's been about 4-5 months now, and we are raising almost the same as our Angelfish. No RO water for the fry at all. pH at 7.6 or even higher. And feeding flake foods as part of their diet. Jump into it. Really not that hard now. Just get your Discus from a reliable source.
