Hi jayhitek, thanks for your response. I wound up getting a 1-inch black compressiceps from Dave's Rare Fish, and a 2-inch probable gold head compressiceps from a fish store. The latter is still in quarantine. I ran the photos of the fish through AI, which claims to be able to tell me the small one is male, and the large one is female (claims a 70% probability of being right). My rationale is that since the fish are of different sizes, they may not register as competitors, and that may minimize aggression. Also, the big one will be going into the small one's established territory, and if the AI sexing is correct, they should also have a good chance of getting along with each other.
These are C. microlepidotus, which some references suggest are more aggressive than leptosoma when they start breeding. Apparently it's better to have more females than males, but since I got juveniles, I can't tell yet. If the males start fighting and I want to rehome some surplus males, do you think I would have trouble finding homes for them without accompanying females?
