I know there are some experts out there and I would love some advice. :)

I have been looking into getting a new camera the past couple weeks and have found a few in the price range I am seeking. I have previously owned a couple kodak point and shoots but am looking to move up in brand and quality. The cameras I have listed here are cannons but I am open to nikons if anyone has other suggestions. Just looking for a good all around point and shoot so any opinions or recommendations are appreciated. I know the one with 5x optical zoom is listed as a "best of 2013" under quite a few lists but I am wondering if sacrificing zoom is worth it and what exactly I would be sacrificing it for. 12x optical does seem rather nice :)

Not a camera expert but...

would like to share my opinion based on my experience.. I would go for the 5x 320 HS.. in my opinion, point and shoot cameras are for close up pics, or shots that you can generally fit in the frame.. i personally would not use a point and shoot for things i would need zooming in for because the quality will fall.. some may appear grainy and lose the nice quality.. all those choices you shop for are generally good with image stabilizing as i have owned a previous canon point and shoot..and even at 12mp it was really good at its prime..i think it would also depend on what you would use the cam for..if you would generally need to use it to zoom on fish and other aquarium stuff, i think a 5x zoom will suffice..12 x zoom will give you ability to zoom further, but then again.. the image will lose quality.. then again, I'm not an expert..just my two cents..

Based on the Amazon links you provided, it looks like your budget is under between $100 and $150. At that price you are only able to choose a point and shoot (P&S).

It depends on what you want to do. If you are only going to shoot people at parties who pose for you then okay.

But if you want to take action shots, candid shots, low light shots, sports, kids playing sports or along those lines then you need to consider saving your money to buy a digital SLR.

The main differences between a P&S and an SLR is the size of the sensor that records the image, with the SLR having a sensor about twice the size of a P&S, therefore a much higher resolution (regardless of the number of pixels), the SLR will focus and shoot almost instantaneously when you squeeze the shutter release while the P&S will slowly focus and the shoot with a noticeable delay when you press the shutter, and the SLR offers interchangeable lenses, which gives you more options than you can use.

I say save for the SLR, even the most inexpensive model from Canon, Nikon (the best), or other manufacturers will out shoot any P&S.

Yeah I would highly recommend the digital SLR route.

It looks like there are a couple used ones on Amazon in the $200 to $300 range.

I think that cell phone cameras have pretty much replaced P&S cameras for most situations. While the quality isn't usually as good, for the most part it is good enough and the generally people have their phones available to take a picture.
