My good friends Rose and Tony Orso laid a couple of very nice Betta on me to photograph. I purchased two plastic boxes at a local craft store. One I painted with a black background and the other I left clear. I set them up on top of a piece of eggcrate suspended across two cinder blocks...
A few months ago I moved my breeding pair of managuense to a larger tank...180 gallons. They are the only two fish in the tank. They bred frequently...like clock work, actually...in the previous tank. After I moved them it took a while for the pair to settle on a new breeding area.
These...
Each RAW file records metadata with details about exposure, ISO, color balance, lens, flash, etc. I've been taking a photo of each lighting set up...and also, I spend a couple hours with the set up and just remember some of the odd details...like position of flash.
Thanks...but NOT Chanchos...
I tried to buy a few more SB-800's but they aren't making them anymore. I just started really learning the SB-900. What an amazing piece of equipment. I had no idea that the gel filters had contact points that, when attached to the camera with the filter holder....is actually recognized by...
Lot's of light. I positioned four Nikon SB-900 flash units on the top of the tanks in this series of photos...with the exception of those noted.
As you can see from the photo below all four flash units are lined up on top, diffused and pointing straight down. If you look closely you can...
Fran,
Look for a Graslon Diffuser. It's about $100 and worth every penny. It comes with a flat diffuser...but you can buy a domed shell that throws out an amazingly soft diffused light. I have four of the SB-900 flash units now and and amazed every day at their performance.
Going along the same vane as a previous post on a light set up for the Zonatum. My goal her was to light the fish both top and bottom as I have previously. The problem I have had in the past is adjusting the lower flash to a point where the light would illuminate the bottom of the fish while...
Nikon. Hands down. The ability to be able to dial in the exposure values...switch master flash units....is invaluable. I just bought a second SB900 and signed up for an on line photo course (Kelby training if you are serious about learning. $25 for unlimited access to hundreds of photo...
The hogaboomorum are breeding AGAIN. I have two 75 gallon tanks full of fry that I plan on bringing to the convention. I recently posted a new lighting set up that I was experimenting with (much to my pleasure) and used something similar with these photos.
Here's the male and female doing...
Tony....you can get a remote trigger for just about any flash for less than (I believe) fifty bucks. No more tether. The D80 is a Nikon, right? DOes it have a Commander Mode in the flash menu?
I wanted to try something different with the lighting set up. Here are the pictures that I shot yesterday. The goal, of course is to evenly light the fish without overly illuminating things around the fish.
Here's how I lit the tank. There are a total of four flash units on these...
My pleasure Tony. I just posted another thread with some more detailed info on lighting tricks.
The largest of this trio is over a foot...maybe 13". The breeding male is smaller. Likely becasue the energy is diverted to breeding and not growing (?)
Some recent photos of the trio of F0 Amphilophus hogaboomorum. I have three of these beautiful fish in a 180 gallon tank. The breeding pair are on the right hand side....the "third wheel" male lives on the left. They breed regularly...and are quite beautiful breeding coloration. Here's...
Thanks man.
As you can see the male is ready for action. This is a good shot of what the male organ looks like from the side. It comes to an obvious point and is pointed forward. A female will look like a soda straw pointed backward.
The female is not ready...no visible sign other than a...
