Malawi vs. Tanganyika vs. Victoria

Its really not about which ones... its about creating a tank that works well.

Tangs aren't like malawi... they don't roam all over your tank. They will typically stick to certain areas ( there are exceptions)

I need to dig up an old post of mine... I will post it in another thread. This way you can pick what kind of fish YOU like and YOU would enjoy.

Some are fast moving... some are slow. Depends on what you are into.

Don't know where it is, guys, but in last year's Biotope, we wrote up an article on Sarah and her Tanganyikans. I'm too disorganized to remember where it is. Maybe someone on the forum could scan it and post it in the members section. If you're thinking of switching to Tangs, I think it would help you out.

Ok. Well here is what I want to do and why, but it's based on limited knowledge of tangs:

I plan to have a 33 long (48" x 12" x 13") tank very well filtered with the following:
1. 12 cyps (not jumbo, I think utinta or blue flash) for the blue/yellow color + schooling at the top of the tank
2. 5 white calvus (i love the shape) and rocks for them to hide when, as often is the case, they get spooked (these are the only tangs I currently have)
3. 6 occies (gold): i've always wanted some shell-dwellers and they're supposed to have really interesting and feisty behavior. I would have two separate areas in the tank with shells and rocks in-between so that they could sort out the turf.

No more room (if even enough for all of those), but if I had the room, and they weren't insanely aggressive, I would love to add a lone lelulipi and maybe a jule or two.

Great! As I said, I have very limited experience with tangs and I'd like to capture as many of the different behaviors and shapes as I can in a smaller tank. I was pretty thrilled when I managed to locate the 48" x 12" footprint tank for this setup.

That's why Tangs are sooo boring because they sit in one place, while Malawi Cichlids entertain you/us.

If you guys want to fall for those Tang salesman, which we call cca members, that's fine...but I'm telling you dudes and dudets after what the GREAT AD KONINGS SAID AT OUR MEETING, IT SHOULD BE QUITE OBVIOUS WHAT FISH IS SUPERIOUR AND THAT'S THE MALAWI CICHLID. PERIOD!

PARDON ME AND MY CAPITAL LETTERS AND MY RUN ON SENTENCE, BUT I'M SO LIVID THAT I DON'T HAVE TIME TO PRESS THE CAP LETTER BUTTON OFF.:angry3::p:wacko::angry::lol::angel2:

CASE CLOSED.

I rest my case your honor. I respectively disagree with you all, but it's about taste and to say that one fish is more evolved than another is like saying that I have Verizon fios and you have dial up. That's an insult and maybe you were not listening to the great Ad Konings, but he clearly stated that the Malawi is modern and has evolved in many ways.

Furthermore, weren't you guys even paying attention to his presentation or were you purposely ignoring all the valuable information he said.

That man has so much experience and I truly believe you are insulting his intellgence by your statements. I'm not trying to say the one is better than the other.

I have sat back quietly and never insulted Lake Tang except to say they are ugly and boring...that's it, but you guys went on and on and that was it. I had to draw the line like the great
Captain Jean-Luc Picard said in Star Trek, " The line is drawn here!"

The reason I'm being vocal is because no one is defending the Great Lake Malawi and so I had to step up to do so...

I havent been in the hobby long at all so malawi was the easiest to pick up. As I progress in the hobby I do plan to at least dabble into all the lakes.

I guess I wasn't quite as vocal as you SubMariner, but I did implicitly suggest that if I could only choose one then I'd go with Lake Malawi. I dream of a 300 gallon tank for an all-male hap setup (currently I have a 95G all-male hap).

I have a small tank with five white calvus and while I do like their shapes I can't say I'm that intrigued with their behavior. But that's why I'm hopeful that the tang tank I intend to set up with occies and cyps as well as the calvus will give the tangs their best shot to impress me.

I didn't know any of this was offensive material, and thought it was just folks expressing their preference of one lake over the other.

certainly, I, for one, had no intention of flaring up anyone's sensativies about it, so no offense meant to anyone.

All 3 have awesome fish. I started with Mbuna and am still very fond of them even tho I'm not keeping any at the moment. I've never kept Victorians, but they are beautiful. My current interest is Tanganyika (known as THE Jewel of the Rift). I always found these fish intrigueing, but the lack of color kept me from trying them... all I can say is what they lack in color they more than make up in other ways. I wish I would have tried them years ago. I jokingly consider myself a darkside member, and I suppose I am, but I also realise that Richard refers to us as the darkside jokingly. It's all in good fun. I respect all of the African Cichlids because I personally feel they are all something really special. As much as I enjoyed all the color and action of the Mbuna's, I'm really loving the unique behaviors and personality's of the Tang's... really great fish to keep and observe. In another 10 yrs I might be a discus freak... who the heck knows, that's the great thing about this hobby, there's always something new to try.

Can I quote myself? Hmm, never tried before... guess I'll find out.

I kinda thought I gave all the lakes their props...

Dude, no one is getting upset! Someone had to defend the lake..hello! What, I can't have a little rant once in a while? That's right, I had to step up and defend the great lake because no one else was. Come on....give me a break no one else was stepping up to the plate. I think you guys misinterpreted my statement.

Don't have a cow guys, I'm just stating my rebuttal, that's all.

Ha! LOL! LMAO...If you don't get it...then you don't get it HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am new around here, so I am not familiar with you. the all caps section and all of the exclamation points... well, it appeared to me you were genuinely upset and "yelling". however, based on your second post, perhaps it is just your posting style. if I misinterpreted, then my apologies... but it looked pretty much like anger to me at the time.

I guess that means I don't get it? :)

When I lived up in rhode island i had a 240g (8x2x2) . all tangs except for a group of p.phenochilus, a nice pleasant mix. Flash and dash as well as community interaction

So now i live in a house with very limited tank space options..... 48" is about max, so i decided to go flashy w all haps / peacocks. The bigger they got, the more depressed I became........ It was like trying to have a conversation with a stripper (or with a jock for the ladies on the forum), it was entertaining for about 3 minutes.

So, now I'm switching back to tangs, I guess I'm looking for off-road rally versus NASCAR (round and round and round......)

Just my controversial and useless two cents.....

(Nothing personal Luis!)

Rich,

He was joking. It's sorta a running joke about the "dark" and "light" side with Sarah and him mockingly at each other's throats... I can see how a new comer might mistake his, "fury" lol but it is all in good fun.

yeah... I can see that now. it is so tough sometimes to tell "emotion" in type, especially when you are not familiar with the person... I was sitting there like "um... wow... okay then"... LOL...

but I got it now. hey... I have been to some discus forums... suffice it to say, you just never know WHAT will set some folks off!

tremper, can you describe the specifics of what you enjoyed with tangs that haps/peacocks lacked? any particular tangs that you enjoyed most and why?
