Dan,

Let me know how this sand is for your ray. I plan on using it for my ray when I get it in March, and I'd like to know if you ray seems to like it well enough. Thanks!

Hey Rich there is a pool supply store on Old Washington Road at the top of Waldorf. I bought sand from there before. The color was a very light beige. It was also very clean and didn't cloud the tank like play sand.

How much sand are you putting in the tank?
I put 100lb in a 90g and I'm starting to see constant high Nitrate readings.
I'm doing weekly water changes of about 50%.
I wonder if I have too much sand and poop is collecting there.
I have an FX5 and 2 power heads.

I'm good with the sand now... however, just fyi... 100 lbs. in a 90 is too much, imo. I put 50 lbs. in my 150 initially, which normally would work pretty well, but in the case of how I am using it, I actually had to take some of that out to get the total depth down to a 1/2 inch and less in spots. I don't need it at 1 inch for my purposes. But if I got up to an inch in spots from 50 lbs. in a 150, I can only imagine how deep yours must be with 100 lbs. in a 90.

I have spots that seem to have 3 inches of sand.
The king of my tank loves it. this Socolofi spends the day digging. I suspect he will not be happy to see me take some of the sand out.
So for a Malawi semi heavily stocked tank, what would be a good depth of sand? 1 inch? or less?

Well... I cannot profess to be sure what your Africans would prefer, as I'm more of a New World kinda guy... but it would seem to be that 1 inch... maybe 1.5 inches tops. Too much sand, and you my risk getting anaerobic pockets in your sand where it is so deep, it isn't getting disturbed or sifted by the fish. That would be bad news.

Thanks Rich. I'm going to remove some sand and level it at 1.5.
I better do it before Aquamania. I do expect to come home with more fish. Divorce lawyer links should be added to the top menu of this site. LOL.
