Mature Red Belly Piranhas for sale or trade

4 mature adults ranging in size from 6-8 inches to a GOOD home.

2 purchased from Aquarium Center in 2002/2003, 2 purchased from Peter Thode's breeding stock in 2006.

They are big, healthy, active, and colorful. Currently housed in a planted 150 gallon with Raphael Cats. These guys are pellet fed (Hikari Gold) and get occasional shrimp as snacks.

If you're interested, please PM me with an offer or potential trade and let me know your plans for them.

Possible items for trade might include -
Lighting for 150 gallon tank
Decor (rocks, drift wood, etc.)
Store credit
Other fish that can coexist with the Raphael Cats (My husband wants to do African Cichlids but he's also in love with those cats. There's not much overlap in pH/hardness for Raphaels and Africans, so I think he's SOL).

I thought I might edit this to read "Geriatric Red Belly Piranhas" but can't figure out how to edit posts.

Though some a-fish-cionado friends of mine swear they'll live 20+ years (yikes), based on what I can find in my books and the interwebs they've already surpassed their captive lifespan...

If there's anyone interested in just giving these guys a new home, send me a message. I'll see if I can talk my husband into giving the boogers away.

Piranhas

I was just wondering if you still have the piranhas? If so I would really like them. I already have two in a 155 gallon planted tank. I would love to add them. Thanks

I do still have them - they were tentatively spoken for by another member before his fishroom flooded... I will check and see if he is still interested.

You could donate them to the Baltimore aquarium Amazon exhibit. They only have 2 rbp. You could donate yours to them. That way you can see them when ever you want. And you will improve the look if their exhibit.

Just a thought.

I tried to talk the hubs into doing that but he, quite accurately, pointed out that if we donate them we won't have any money to use to re-stock the tank. He'd rather have uglies than no fish at all:rolleyes:

I did talk to my friend who works at the National Aquarium yesterday - she says it's highly uncommon for them to take donations and unlikely they'd want these guys.

In other news, they just put on their breeding colors this week... FML.

There are photos of them pre-breeding colors in my albums. The breeding colors are a steely gray to black with gold flecks.

Ricks fish and pet supply will probably take them!

Like Congressional, they'll "rescue them" so they can charge over $100 a piece for them and probably sell them to whatever idiot walks in and wants them, without finding out if they've got a good set up. I'm not "donating" them to a pet store that will sell them for a ridiculous price for 100% profit to any idiot who walks in the door.

I used to work in a reputable LFS and I know the kind of person who is typically looking for fish like this doesn't have a clue about what it takes to keep them well. They just want to see stuff get eaten, brutally.

I honestly have a good relationship with many of the workers and the owner, Rick Bell, and I don't think that they would really sell them to just ANY idiot, because they usually give you care tips and ask what size tank you have. When I just begun into the hobby, I tried to buy a leopard bushfish for a 5 gallon, but they got me to do guppies and a snail. This was 2 years ago.
