when I was looking for substrate options, I ran into Play sand or pool filter sand(PFS). I forgot the reasons as to why PFS was better.
How much do you need? I think I'll have some extra PFS within 2 weeks.

It is REALLY dirty stuff, but if you rinse in small batches it's much easier. It's impossible to rinse it until your water runs clear. What I do is put a 1-2 inch layer in a bucket, rinse, and pour water off. After I've done this 5-6 times, I rinse and put the bucket down. If the water is basically clear after 1 minute, then it's clean. If it's still cloudy, you've still got non-sand particles in there.

And that's the benefit of pool filter sand: much cleaner.

check hd lowe's and my garden supplies around my neighborhood not luck so far,i'll keep looking thanks beca for the imput.

Are you looking in the right spot? I've never seen a depot not carry it. Its with all the other concrete on pallets. If its not there I assume its because its the off season. I use it and don't have any problems. Like becca said just rinse it. I've noticed it stays put better than most aquarium sands.

If you haven't found it by the next meeting, let me know. I can check our local stores - there's 3 within driving distance from my house and one of them (Germantown, MD) currently has 202 bags - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Quikrete-50-lb-Play-Sand-111351/100318476

It says it's in the "tan" color family online, but I think this is the white stuff.

It is such beautiful stuff when it first goes in a fish tank, but I've learned the hard way that it doesn't stay that bright white for too long. Still, nicer looking than PFS when it comes down to it and possibly worth the extra effort.

That's the one in Germantown, on Frederick Road, near the intersection of 355 and Shakespeare.

The one in Gaithersburg (Shady grove) supposedly had some too. They are only about 10 minutes from each other - one is exit 16 off of I270 the other is Exit 8.

Last time I picked up play sand at that HD, it was tan/blond in color. Was probably 8 or so months ago though....
