Matt's question is about what is creating the nitrate/nitrite. The only way you have nitrite in a tank is if it is present in your tap water or some organism is creating ammonia that is converted to nitrite.

Yes, the initial ammonia came from the used cartridge filter I put in which had a fair bit of fish waste still on it. Took about a week before I saw ammonia spike up to 1.0ppm.
