Some nontraditional stocking being considered now

A nitrite spike in my 45 (see other post) killed two of my five female blue orchid peacocks, and right now only one male is currently in that tank. The three surviving ladies and the subdom male I'd pulled a few days earlier) are swimming around very happily in a 20 gallon.

So I'm toying with a untraditional stocking:

20-- keep the boy and the three ladies for now and see what happens.

45 -- keep the one male and add a small colony of young labs (removing them/trading them as they get older)

What do you think?

No problem at all with a peacock and a group of yellow labs. Should work out great.

I thought that you were going to try to keep a bichir with some tetras or something ;)

+1. Throw them all in the 45 when you're sure the parameters have stabilized for the good.

Swing by some time for a bag of yellow labs on the house. :)

My original breeding group was 2M/4F in a 25 gallon tank. a 25 is essentially a tall 20 gallon. The tank may have been a little overcrowded, but they spawned several times and didn't have any issues with aggression.

Just saying you could go either way. They would probably be ok in the 20 with enough caves, but I'm sure they'd appreciate the room in the 45. My current breeding group is in a 30 long with some calvus and occies, and have spawned successfully several times.

thanks Tony for the call and offer. I'm going to take you up on some labs and add them with the male to the 45 when I'm sure it's stabilized. That will add some nice color.

I'm going to see what happens in the 20, with the thought that if the girls get roughed up, they'll go back in the 45.

I know I can leave the one sub dom in there (he seemed happy in there when he was alone) to keep the tank occupied.

Got good nitrite readings today and even fed a little bit tonight. I counted all six lucippinis and the baby, so that made me happy. Tony -- if I continue to get good readings, I'd like to add the labs. Are you around on Sunday?

Not sure how the girls are going to fare in the 20 gallon. The male is being a bit of a butthead, but nothing too serious. Dave (of Dave's rare fish) thinks it might work... if not, I think I'll offer the females to someone (DiscusNAfricans?) and just keep the lone male in the 20 as my little pet . . .

Hopefully they will get along in the 20. If not, I'd be happy to offer them a home.
