"If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor. Go to 'The Fish Place' in North Tonawanda, NY."

Well, I did myself a favor today. Got unexpectedly side-tripped to Niagara Falls for a job (I was already in Rochester), and hit The Fish Place on the way home today. Now THAT is a fish store! A lot of variety, including a lot of 'seldom seen in stores' fishes. Good prices. AND EVERYTHING LOOKED HEALTHY! They breed some of their own stuff-they hatch brine shrimp right at the bagging table. They are not on a central system-all UGFs. Came home with a styro full of fish and all survived the 7+ hrs in the bags.

This place had 5 different Pike cichlids in stock (but alas, no dwarfs-I can't handle a big pike in my tanks). Lots of Africans and New Worlds as well as a couple goodeids, some killies, a few very cool plecos, a couple Pseudomugils, etc. Definitely worth the trip if you are anywhere near N. Tonawanda (which is about 10 miles east from Niagara Falls).

I LOVE THAT STORE!!! I go there just to look around everytime I go home. What was in the monster tank in the back? They always rotate it. Last time I was there it was filled with SA/CA cichlids and cats. They had about 6 full grown peacock bass monsters!
They have a huge basement where they breed most of their stock. They get lots of odd synos, plecos, and other oddballs regularly. Its a very cool store.

Next time you're up there, you should check out a store called Markheim Tropical Pets. Its not far from "the fish place". I think its a little bigger or maybe its just more spread out. They always carried different fish than tfp. Between those two stores I always lots of options. :happy0180:

I didn't have a lot of time with a long drive home ahead of me, so I didn't pay too much attention to the big fish. But there were big fish in there.

I suspected they had a breeding op in the basement. There were some livebearers in the plant tanks that they wouldn't sell me. I believe they were Limia sulphurophila, which isn't seen very often. They said they didn't have enough of them to start selling them yet.

Oh well.

Oh Dang! You didn't get to see any of the salt water stuff? It's basically sectioned off into four rooms. Dry goods, gold fish and live bearers with very peaceful cichlids, an aggressive section, and salt water with the monster fish tank along the back wall.

They do a couple of awesome display tanks but then don't sell that stock. I always thought they should but what do I know.
