Sb 600 Speed Flash

I'm finally getting around to buying a speed flash for my Nikon D80. I really want the Nikon SB800 but I can get a SB600 delivered for $174. I'm thinking the SB600 should get the job done until I can save enough for the more expensive SB800. Any thoughts or suggestions on either model, or extra equipment that's useful with the flash.

The SB600 is a very good flash. What it lacks from the SB800 is that it doesn't have the ability to work as a "Master" to fire other slaves. It is also a little less powerful than it's bigger brother. And, I think the SB600 doesn't come with the plastic diffuser attachment (sto-phen type).

Most of us have multiple flashes in our bag to provide a variety of slave flash scenarios. Except for the SB800, I think you have the best start for your collection.

I think the SB-600 will work well enough (I have not used one). The advantage of the SB-800 is that it can be used as a Master and trigger other flashes. Commander Mode does this as well, if I remember correctly. Man I need to get my equipment out again and start shooting, I can't even remember what it does :smashfreakB: However, most people seem to agree that the SB-800 is worth the extra money.

Edit: Looks like Bobby types faster than I do

Thanks for the advice. I am going to need 2 flashes, since the SB600 is cheaper I'll get that first. Once I get a good flash , hopefully I should be able to improve some of my pictures.

Ok, I'm finally ready to get my SB-600. I've seen it advertised for as low as $155 on the internet.

The problem is once I started researching the company's that offer it the $150/60 range their reviews were terrible.
All of there customer comments were riddled with negative comments about their use of bait and switch techniques, basically warning everyone to avoid dealing with them at all cost.

This bring me to the next price range ( $180). The dealers at this point seem to be more reputable. I'm wondering if I should even bother with a online purchase if I can get it locally for $20 more and have the item in my hand the same day.. In some instances it would cost the same depending on taxes, shipping etc.

So my question is does anyone know of a dealer that they would recommend online, locally or otherwise.

Thanks

Kevin,

The added bonus of buying it locally is that you gain a contact at the store and depending on who you get it can be someone that you can go back to on a regular basis with questions. Lori got her stuff from the Ritz camera store in Reston and they had several employee's that were extremely knowledgeable as they work there because they have a passion for camera's and dont make enough money selling their photo's to not have another job but were very helpful in answering any of Lori's questions.

Kevin, the most reputable web dealer for camera equipment is B & H. I have bought much stuff there.
Freight should be cheaper than sales tax too.

Thanks Bobby and Rob,
Bhphotovideo is closed until next week so that ruled them out.

I looked at one of your old posts about Service Photo Supply in Baltimore their price was the same as the reputable web dealers.

I also called Penn Camera since they are close by, they are going to match the Service Photo price.

So for just a little over $3 more(tax vs. shipping) I can have the flash in my hand today verses next week and its only a 20 minuted drive round trip, going to Baltimore would be longer in time and gas.
