Salvini Temperament

I have an opportunity to get one of these super attractive fish, but all of what I know has these fish being awfully, um... rambunctious.

Anyone here have experience with this fish? Do you think it could do okay in a 125, 6 footer w/ a very large oscar, a maybe 9 inch vontehillo, a maybe 7 or 8 inch fenestratus, and believe it or not, about 6 or 7 juvie festae growouts (about 3 inches or so, and I'll be moving these guys, once they get a little bigger, and I get any that pair off... but so far, they've done really well in this tank!)?

Really want to try one, but do not want it terrorizing the tank. The only other tank I have that I could use is a 75 gallon with a trio of young freddies I got from Tony... but I feel like that would be an immediate disaster. Thinking I should pass, but thought I'd check the braintrust here first!

Thanks for any and all opinions!

I've never kept salvinis but heard that they are pretty mean. But, your 125 has some fish that aren't exactly cupcakes. You probably would be okay. You may even be alright in the 75 until the la ciebas breed, then everything else in the tank will be killed.

One thing, I have heard that salvinis are very reclusive when kept as a single rather than a breeding pair. Not to turn you away from a beautiful fish, but don't expect them to be glass bangers.

I have kept a single male in a CA/SA community setup - had to remove him. I then put a female in that same setup and she does just fine.

I've actually had similar results with festae. I tried a male in a community, and no way... it was just too nasty. Female, no problem.

I had a pair. The female laid eggs but the male did not fertilize. She killed him protecting her eggs. A couple of days later, I found her dried on the carpet. I would like to try again at some point. They are really colorful and active cichlids.

Yeah... he told me he had to move them, due to them starting trouble with the other fish. I decided to pass. I have peace and harmony in my tanks, finally. I want to keep it that way! LOL...

I have kept them and bred them several times. They earn every bit of their nasty reputation. That said... they are beautiful. I could always tell whenever they bred because all of the other fish would be in a small corner of the tank. I never had any major problems until they went after my freddy pair didn't work out well for them. They were murdered quickly.
