7 and 8 are Astatotilapia Calliptera. They are from a river system that feeds into Lake Malwi, and can be found in the lake as well. They are very similar to some fish found in Lake Victoria, and are often confused with such. The lake population and the river population mix a great deal, which has created the situation in which there are NO other related species of Astatotilapia in Lake Malawi. They are considered by many to be non-endemic to the lake, even though they were not introduced by man. However, I forget what river they are found in...... Also, some believe them to be the same type of fish that all Malawi fish came from, but I'm not so sure about that.....
I'm not sure about tank mates yet. Mine are a rather large breeding group (8+ fish, I forgot how many I put in the tank, and the tank is inconveniently high for one of my small stature) in a 30B. I don't have too much aggression, though one male DID get kicked out of the tank and is peacefully living with some Peacocks. These fish also breed like rabits, and only hold their fry for about 2 week, though they make up for it by having smaller fry. I have a batch growing out, which hopefully will be ready to sell soon, I think they will be too small for sale in September though.
These are actually one of my favorites, don't know why though. But the males ARE pretty. They change from a Marigold yellow (pic 8 has the male feeling good in his yellow Tux) to a greenish yellow (when he wants to have a little fun with his girlfriends), and have this black belly and fins and a red forehead. They look like they are kinda wearing a tuxedo! My pics don't do them justice, and I have yet to find one on the web that does. But they WON"T hold still!!!! And they are too high up for me to reach easily.
Later!
Amanda.
