It would prob be effective in an 18x18" chamber, maybe a little less. Are you filling the entire sump or just a chamber?

Yes. Planning to fill a large area of the sump.. Well.. I guess I'll have to use the foam as an adjustable compartment, moving it when I get more k1..

A Mag24 is a whole lot of pump, with over 1600 gph @ 5' of head. Are you just over running your drains? Maybe a smaller pump will get you to a stable flow rate, and make things quieter.

Can you throw up a picture of your overflow & drain setup, and your sump?

Reason for a mag24 is if I wanted to go bigger, I wouldn't worry about buying another pump.. I spent about $140 on a brand new mag24 which I think is a good price for one.. So I got it before it was gone.. I have the drain pic on the beginning of the post.. And the sump is hard to picture.. To give you an idea, the sump is 72x18x17.. That's why I had to build another stand for it.. The returns have valve valves on them..I wish I had not skimped on price and gone for gate valves..which I think would have been easier to control flow..

It was just hard for me to tell, but I guess the two middle ones are the returns?

Maybe just go with one large gate valve before your 2:1 split on the return? The problem I see with the paired ball valves currently is adjusting one down will result in more back pressure & flow hitting the other, making it a seesaw game to adjust the pair. Throttling directly off the pump will give you more control of the overall flow into the tank.

Then its just a matter of adjusting the gate valve to make the flow balanced with the return volume to keep your water level where you want it in the display tank.

I just went through this with installing a sump on my 180G - I went the dual pump/gate valve/return route with smaller pumps. And found out my "smaller" is too much with both full throttle and I was out running my drain lines! I too could not resist bumping up my pump size, so now I'm running with just one on. :)

The single gate valve sounds good.. I am thinking of installing one right near the sump pump as I don't want to cut more PVC from those.. I could but maybe I just don't want to.. I will put in consideration your suggestion.. And yes, the two middle ones are the returns..
