So I bought this acrylic 180 two months ago after selling the old 180.. I bought it used and was thinking of setting up a sump system.. Its my first time ever setting up one, as well as building the stand for it so it took me a while to get it done and running with time constraints..I need some help with a few modifications.. I have attached some pics..

I'm now running a sump on this tank, and am having some problems with return and drains.. I'd like to have some ideas from those who have experience with these setups..

My method is a Herbie overflow system..with a drain making full suction and one on a higher level acting as secondary flow and surface skimmer. I'm running a danner mag 24 on the sump.. With two 1" returns that are reduced to a 3/4 near the top..

The problem.. Sometimes water doesn't flow through right in the sump and makes the water in the pump compartment really low that makes bubbles go into the tank.. I turn down the returns and the water level drops even more in the tank that it doesn't have enough height for the secondary drain to function ..thus I only get one drain and two returns.. Should I turn down the returns even more? Or add more water?

Filtration on this big build is not done yet as I am still trying to figure out water flow.. Tank has been up for 5 days now and I'm still constantly adjusting.. I out the fish in there so I can see if my drains or returns are all too strong ..

My sump will hold a compartment for k1 media, as I am going to try the fluidized bed filtration system.. I'm planning to use port foam in conjunction with the k1 and nothing else.. Since I already have problems with water flowing through the sump system, I'm debating whether I should get a low density foam or continue with the high density ones to add mechanical filtration?

Secondary is the noise from the pump..I've wrapped it in rubber mats used in my moms kitchen cupboards and held down with rubber bands around the pump..its toned down the noise, but I'm wondering if I could do more.. Any ideas are welcome.

Lighting on this tank is done by 2x 36" aquatic life edge LED and, so far got no complaints.. The come with a built in timer and ramping system..and with the light the final colors look amazing.. Just need to finalize the water filtration so I can have clear water..

Heating on the system is done by a finnex 800 titanium heater and controlled by finnex 0810 heater controller.. So far water temp is ok at 80 degrees..

Very nice!
Are you going to use the 3D background in it? I'd like to see a pic of the tank with it.
Sorry but I know ZERO about sumps so I really can't comment on that.
I was curious to know why you went the sump route since you have the other tank with the canister filters. is it because the tank came "sump ready"?

Thanks! I probably won't use the 3D background with this tank..maybe the next 180..lol.. I'm going to have a difficult time with the food that gets in the back of the background, and I'm worried it would lower down my water quality as well as demand more time to clean..which will eventually make this hobby tiresome.. I want to keep it simple and enjoyable.. I decided to go the sump route because I have heard many good things about it.. Yes the tank came drilled, but it could be easily plugged.. I guess I just wanted to try it.. I'm experimenting on different kinds of filtration systems to see which one will benefit the fish most, me second , and pricing third.. So yeah, my 125 is filtered by 2 fx5's.. My 33 longs by sponge filters, my 30 by hob filters , and the 180 by sump.. So I'm gonna see what makes the best out of it, or leave it the way it all is..

Turn flow to your max desired rate then just add water to the sump. I had the same issue with mine and that's what fixed the bubble.

I'm doing k1 and Poret foam in mine to lol

Also matrix, bio max and filter socks for added bio and mech

Awesome! Where is your source for k1? And what PPI density do you use for your poret?

23 liters.. Does it fill a 75 gallon? I'm not sure if the 1 cubic feet mean 1 foot high, 1 foot long and 1 foot wide when not in motion or is it supposed to cover that space when moving? And where about did you place your poret?

No where close to filling a 75, it comes in a packed cubic foot box..
I need to redo my sump in order for it to work

So how many gallons would you think it would fill? I need an idea on how much to order.

It would prob be effective in an 18x18" chamber, maybe a little less. Are you filling the entire sump or just a chamber?
