Mouth Fungus help

Noticed my largest male Boesemani rainbow has a stringy like cotton or wool looking thing dangling from his mouth. From what I've read its probably mouth fungus thats actually bacteria eating at the flesh. I noticed this previously but I though it might be an injury because it sort of looked like some flesh was hanging off. Anyways Im not sure how I should treat this. It seems to come and go and dose not seem to be effecting him too badly. A few of the other boesemani seem to have it slightly but again, it comes and goes. Note that the 5 boesemani are the only adult rainbows in the tank. There are also 10 dwarfs and 4 zig zags that are still young and seem unaffected by this fungus... same with all the other fish in the tank. This 75g tank is fully stocked for sure but i have 3 diff filters lots of plants and do wc weekly 50-75%.

Thanks for the help

You can also safely dose pima and mela fix at the same time. From the API Website:
Yes, using Melafix and Pimafix together is perfectly safe and is in fact recommended if treating stubborn infections. When using both Melafix and Pimafix together, use each at the normal recommended dose – there is no need to reduce the dose if using both of them.

I would take out the carbon in the filter just to make sure you get the full effects of the medicine. I'd rather be safe than sorry as both tell you to take the carbon out. As for how much gets removed by the carbon, I have absolutely zero idea on that.

I don't run carbon on any of my tanks unless it's old filter pads that have them on it. all of those are several years old now. I still take those out just in case when I medicate anything (they are slowly being replace by newer filter media). My 2 cents.

Good luck! I hate fungus...

i don't run carbon on my tanks either. I'm just wondering if i will need to use carbon to extract the meds after the treatment is over?

I wouldn't worry about trying to remove either from your water with anything other than normal water changes. I believe both will become inert rather quickly once introduced to the tank. It's been a while since I used either of them, but I think they recommend daily treatment, which to me mean that it isn't doing much after 24 hours.

Added bonus is that melafix makes your tank smell nice for a couple of hours, if you like the smell of tea tree oil.

duhhh i didn't think of that, but makes perfect sense. Yeah the smell was strong... it sort of intensified the headache I've been dealing with today.....oh well .... as long as the fish are happy hah

is it common for fish to itch their gills after medicating the water? today is the 3rd day ive medicated tank with pima and melafix.
