He is a real beauty. I have had the worst luck raising nics. My last female got to be about 9 inches and then up and died overnight. Totally unexpected. I haven't tried them since.

Well I have small babies for sale from my pair. And they spawned again tonight even with 30+ babies in the 46g. They do not eat the babies for some reason and are great parents.

At 9" yours must have been a male as females get 6" max.

Hypsophrys nicaraguensis I have seen Macaw cichlid as a common name, but I think Nic is used a lot more.
