Group Rock Order

The guys and gals at GWAPA are trying to get together an order for some
porous mossy rock. This is a rock found in California and is great for aquariums. The GWAPA guys use it all the time and like to attach plants to it.
They are trying to get enough people together to place an order since the minimum for shipping is around 2000 lbs.
It should work out to around 50cents per lbs.

This link will show you a picture of the type of rock
http://geology.about.com/library/bl/images/blbasalt.htm

This thread will act as an order form.
Please list how many pounds of rock you would like and I will pass it on in a few days.

I will start with 50 lbs

I'm good for 100 pounds. I see this stuff replacing my current rock. Neat thing about it has all those little holes in it. Great hiding places for fry.

I am already committed through GWAPA for my rock, of which I am getting at least 200 lbs pretty sure I am going to bump that up to 300 to allow me to totally rescape my 120 gallon tank, but I will tell you there is nothing else like this in our area. I spent an entire backbreaking day with two members from GWAPA on our last order breaking this stuff into smaller pieces. Its well worth the cost for the look it gives the aquarium. The batch we got last time would be the color of the second photo in the link here in the thread, with the texture of the first. Many of the stones due to contour offer natural caves and great stability if you were looking to make it into a rock wall or rock feature. For those in the group that have larger aquaria, 120+gallons, I would think you would be able to accomodate some of the rocks without even breaking them up. If anyone has questions about the stone feel free to pm me or call me at 703-220-7049. I will take a few photos of the actual rock I got last time to let everyone see it.

Thanks
Rob

Amanda,

I'll be paying the tab to get it here. Pay at time of pickup, I'm available almost every evening and most weekends as well. If we get enough commitment, I'll bring it in and recoup as folks pick it up. I'd like to be over 80% committed before slapping the charge on my credit card  , which is why I'm showing it to the local clubs ahead of time.

Pallets of it run 2000-2400 pounds or so. The rock itself is cheap, it is the shipping a ton of rock common freight across the country that is the killer  . Should land at $.50 a pound or so, as was mentioned, freight hasn't changed much since the last time GWAPA did one that I am aware of.

It comes in as a big pallet of big landscaping rocks. Like, 50-60 pounds boulders. We'll hold a sledgehammer party to break some up for folks to have smaller pieces ready to go if they wish, or you can pick up boulders and hammer it at home (or not if you have really big tanks) if you prefer. Will have a sledge here if you'd like to crack open your own rocks. :smashfreakB:

You aren't joking when you says it's all over cali. My mom and other relatives have tons of this stuff in their back yards. People hate it out there and take jack hammers to it and take it off to the dump! LOL

I remember falling quite a few time when I was a kid... many cuts from the stuff !

Ok, we will take 200 lbs.

Ouch! Who would have thought I'd order 200 lbs of rock?

Later!

I like the idea of growing plants on this rock. I could use 10 or 20 pounds of small pieces.

I'm interested, but wondering how much rock would be appropriate. Is it particularly heavy or light? How much to fill a 75g tank? Any guidance you could give would be helpful.

It is a very dense rock so I would imagine if you wanted to do a rock wall along the entire back of a 75 it would probably take about 100 lbs, that might be high but I am thinking that the rocks that would constitute the base of a wall for a 75 would be larger solid pieces which are really heavy. You could probably get a couple decent formations of stone broken up with about 50-70 lbs.

Thanks

I would be interested in 100lbs. The only concern I have is when I would be able to pick it up. Do we have an estimated time of arrival? and if I mail a check would someone be willing to hold the rock until I can make a trip up?

Thanks,
Aaron

If it's not too late I'd also like to get ~100 lbs of rock.

(And thanks to Aaron for asking the two questions I wanted to ask before ordering!) :happy0012:

Thanks!

Just tabulating. I might actually have to get to the point of rationing, lol, so making sure we have the folks who said yes listed and in on the buy.

Pat - 50
Bobby - 100
Amanda - 200
Frank - 20
Kurt - 50
Frank - 100
Aaron - 100
Jennifer - 100

Total - 720.

Have about 800-1000 pounds committed in GWAPA. PVAS just saw it Monday night. Will snag some orders from them and get the stuff ordered... maybe I'll be able to give folks rocks around Christmas time, how funny would that be :p
