fry attack

yesterday I got some rosy reds to feed to the big guys in the 120. I had some extras, and instead of feeding them to my turtle I put them in with the fry (texas x jack dempsey) to see what happens. Within a second of plopping in one of the feeders all the fry swim up to it and start ripping it apart, withing a few minuits nothing was left except a sceleton and scales. I threw in another and the same thing happened. I guess they just thought they where piranas.

Just my opinion, but store bought feeders are a terrible idea if you don't quarantine them first, then feed them with quality food to actually get some nutrition in them. I've seen the tanks at most stores, and I would guess they don't get fed all that often. You are really rolling the dice with your fish with little to no benefit. A good quality pellet will offer much better nutrition to your fish without any risk. If you are determined to feed live foods, opt for worms (blackworms for smaller fish and red wigglers for larger ones).

I agree that other live foods are preferable. If you must do feeders something like guppies or an easy to spawn substrate spawning cichlid is the best way to raise your own.
