Fresh water clams

Has anyine tried using freshwater clams to help with filtration?

I have always thought about it but dred the idea of having them all die on me for some reason and me not noticing. Talk about tank crashing....

Some types (or most types) can be parasitic when spawning. I can't remember all the details but I think it had something to do with the spores or whatever type of offspring attaching to the gills.

They clean the tank very well and then die of starvation. Best in a pond outside...
