I took everything out of the tank today.. Even the sand.. I found her buried all the way underneath the sand to the glass in the very corner where no rocks were.. She must have somehow buried herself deep and could not get back out..WOW!!..

Wow! So glad you found her, but sorry it wasn't a happy ending.

My Astatotilapia sp. 44 like to bury themselves apparently....freaked me out the first time I took them out, drained the tank, then saw a lump in the sand moving.

Heard this happen a few rare times seems like they have all been fish labeled "blue followers". Peculiar, as I read the post I realized that was the only possible place you hadn't looked.....then I got to the part where someone else beat me to it. Ya kill ya learn. Sure that won't happen again. Was that the mommy

One of my old Africans used to do that. He ended up getting buried in the gravel for a week. He ended up surviving and needed only minor external wound treatment

Thoracochromis Brauschi will bury themselves in the sand as well. I never saw it in person but Greg Steeves told his younger ones would do that during every water change.

My Fossochromis rostratus do that from time to time. They're generally only partially covered, but occasionally wind up in sand "snowbanks" completely covered but for one of their gills.

Few fishkeeping-related events are as unnerving as startling as a 12" hap and having it emerge violently from under the sand.
