Discus tank up and running

I have finally finished preparing my 36g for the discus and threw them in last night. A few months ago I had a tank crash with parasites. I bleached it and the filter and started the cycle over with emerald rainbows generously provided by Josh at Batfish for just that purpose. It took 2 solid months, but now it is perfect. I added all the wood I had, and Eric (screen name: etu1002) gave me the tall plants and java moss. The discus are loving it after living in a small 15 g for 3 months.

It has been a real experience putting this all together. But I can already see the discus are happy basking in the plants and nipping the driftwood.

The tank looks nice. What's the plan for upgrading once the discus put on some size?

I have a 45g that I have put on standby. All of these Discus except for two are Snakeskins. Two of the snakeskins were generously given to me by Darin Gasperson from ACA, so I have some new blood in the tank to hopefully breed F1s. And I have 2 Marlboro reds that Josh found for me. The rest are from Doug's line before he dropped out of the hobby.

There are a lot of fish in that tank. How often are you changing your water?

Every other day. The rainbows will most likely be moved because I only needed them to cycle the tank for me these past two months. I believe in very frequent water changes for the discus, but I do not believe they need DAILY water changes. A 60% water change every other day seems to keep them very happy by the looks of it.

As long as you don't feed really messy food, what you are doing should be fine. Good luck with your discus.

I'd just be concerned with them in a small tank. Tony tried to keep his discus in a 45 and it didn't end up well. They are cichlids, after all.

They will be fine until they grow bigger. The rule of thumb is 10G per adult discus.

Experts say daily 75% water changes. I try to keep to a daily 50% water change, but some days I just can't. Also, I feel that daily large water cahnges are more stressfull to the fish.

With my 29-gallon planted (lightly) community, I have one discus. I do 80-90% water changes once a week.
