Paint really is the easiest and cheapest way to go. There are manufactured tape on back grounds that you can get from most stores or on line retailers. You could also just tape paper to the back ground, but I don't think that would look very good.

Paint is also my favorite unless the tank is already set up and you can't reach the back. If you are just worried about paint being permanent....it isn't. I scrape it off of tanks all the time (when I get used tanks) and then repaint them however I like.

As for color, consider brown as well. I had someone suggest that to me recently and I love it. Black makes certain types of fish look great, but dark colored fish won't look good against the black.
