Australoheros Oblongim.

South American actually, mix well with Geo's, and have a winter cooldown in the wild. TFH magazine published an article about their close relatives a few months ago, but didn't mention this particular species. They're closely related to Australoheros "red ceibal", but don't grow quite as large.

Correct. Males tend to max out at 5" and females 3".

My adult pair is amazingly NON-aggresive to other fish. Even with eggs or wigglers they only stay to a 12" space in the back corner of the tank and let other fish come fairly close.

The pair bond is very strong too.

I have heard the Red Ceibals and other Australoheros get rather aggresive.

Are you like that too ToddnBecka?

My pair have a very strong pair-bond even when they aren't spawning. No issues with interspecific aggression from the oblongum, but I haven't kept any of the larger species. I suspect the red ceibal may provoke a response if they wwere housed together since their pattern is so similar. As for the oblongums in general though, I can't think of many other cichlid species that are so easy to get along with for me or other tankmates.

Uruguyan chanchitos tend to be much more aggressive, especially the facetum-types (vs. The scitulus types)

mixing oblongums with other chanchitos will result in dead oblongums. I have mine with laetecara and some spare males with gymnogeos

Thanks for sharing the pics. The colors are great. Are you bringing any of the fry to the Nov CCA auction?

No. Unfortunately I live too far away. I dont have anymore fish to sell.

ToddnBecka may have some and posibly could bring them to the meeting.

Thanks...Bill

These guys are growing slow. Only about 1/2" now, but at least they look like fish.

I feed 4-5 time a day. Various foods that I crush so they fit in their mouths. De-encapsulated brine shrimp eggs, Hikari Cichlid gold, and flake.

I do water changes every third day.

Any other tips?

The original spawn was pretty small and I lost a few so have about 30 fry in the 26g tank.

Thanks....Bill

Here is a between spawn shot of dad. He is getting fat

Wow! I just found this shot. I read the posts previously, but somehow missed this one. Great picture!

I snatched some fry from my pair and am growing them as well.

Might be fun to do a grow out contest with these guys!
