75 filter?

Personally I would go with the 2217 Classic on a 75g. Big Al's has a sale on them, plus free shipping, plus coupon code.

Another personal opinion about used canister filter is the fear of a scratched impeller and ultimately the dreaded hum-grind noise. Horrifying to say the least!

HONESTLY WHATEVER YOU GET YOU WANT IT TO FILTRATE 5XS WHAT YOUR TANK VOLUME IS. SO FOR A 75G YOU NEED SOMETHING THAT DOES A MINIMUM OF 375 GPH(GALLONS PER HOUR). THE ONE YOU WANT SAYS 160 GALLONS A HR.......IMO NOT SUFFICIENT AS ITS ONLY DOUBLING WITH A EXTRA 10 GALLONS. I KNOW YOU WANT A CANNISTER BUT A AC 110 OR EMPEROR 400 WOULD DO YOU BETTER AND YOUR FISH WILL APPRECIATE THAT MUCH MORE AS WELL.

I use the 2126 Eheim proII and love it. I use it along with an AC110. I have this on 2 75 tnks. Running two years now and absolutely no probs. Still as silent as the day I got it. Comes with media and trays that are so easy to clean. Wonderful design and craftsmanship. No leaks at all

160 is the recommended tank size not throughput 275gph and it is allegedly not "used" just an open box

I have never used a canister filter before, in the past I have used sumps, and power filters so not determined to get a specific kind just seeing what is out there

I love canister filters. Right now I have a 2026 on my 75 along with a AC70 and a Penguin 400. Everything is great and fish are healthy.

I run an FX5 on each of my 75s and 2 FX5s on my 125. I like the comfort that comes with knowing the water is being turned over more than 5X an hour. Plus the directional outputs are a nice feature.

Not totally correct. The efficiency of your filter is a product of the flow through the medium AND the volume of medium the water is flowing through. A lower flow through much more medium in a canister is preferable to a high flow through a minimum of medium in an HOB type filter. Of course, there is a point of diminishing return where the flow is too slow, but you should not have that problem with that canister on that tank.

However, there is another consideration-oxygenation. The HOB with a higher flow rate will oxygenate your water much better. So the question becomes one of whether the fish you have need higher oxygen levels, or if the number of fish you have in the tank will require that you have higher oxygenation of the water. Of course, oxygenation can be accomplished with the addition of an airstone.
