2 FINE OR NOT TO FINE

"THE ALL POWERFUL Q !!
IN LIGHT OF RECENT NFL GAMES WHERE PLAYERS HAVE BEEN INJURED BY CONCUSSION CAUSING BLOWS I WANTED TO HEAR CCA VIEWS. I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT LEADING WITH THE HEAD OR FOREARM IS MALICIOUS INTENT. I ALSO FEEL THAT THE NFL HAS REGALLED IN HARD HITTING PLANT YOU ON THE GROUND HITS. THEY EVEN HAD A SHOW FOR IT. NOW SAYING THIS HOW CAN THE NFL SAY NOW WEEK 7 THAT THEY WANNA CHANGE THE RULES FOR SOMETHING THEY ENCOURAGED AND PROMOTED. NO I DONT WANT TO SEE ANYONE HURT BUT LIKE COOLEY DID SUNDAY NIGHT HE KEPT PLAYING BUT HIS SYMPTOMS CAUGHT UP TO HIM AND HE PULLED HIMSELF OUT THE GAME. NOT EVERYONE HAS COMMON SENSE THOUGH. I PERSONALLY FEEL AFTER TAKING SHOTS LIKE THAT YOU TRULY CANT THINK CLEARLY. I THINK A FINE IS APPROPRIATE ON "MALICIOUS HITS" BUT NOT A GOOD HIT THAT WASNT DONE WITH MALICIOUS INTENT. BY THAT I MEAN NO HELMET TO HELMET, SPEARING OR USING THE FOREARM IN TACKLING.LASTLY IF YOU DONT WANT THEM HITTING LIKE THAT LETS START OFF BY TEACHING THESE KIDS AT THE LOWER LEVELS AND NOT GLORIFYING A CRIPPLING HIT. KINDA REMINDS ME OF STEROIDS BECAUSE THEY WERE TAKING THEM TO BE FASTER AND STRONGER TO COMPETE BETTER ITS JUST THAT NOW THEY ARE LEGALLY PLAYING WELL AND GETTING PUNISHED FOR THEY WAY THEY WERE TRAINED AND TAUGHT.

I've got mixed emotions on the issue. I played football in high school and college and there are times when the helmet to helmet contact is unintentional. In other cases, it was purposeful. Big hits are something that I was taught from early on in playing the game. I think that it may not be the right thing to do to change the rules in the middle of the season. I also think that fining a player for a hit in the game that wasn't ruled illegal is a tough one to swallow. I don't think the guy from Pittsburgh was flagged on his hit, yet he was fined $75k.

I don't know if there is a right answer. I don't want to see anyone get hurt, but hits are part of the game.

YES YOU ARE CORRECT AND THE RECEIVER DROOPED HIS HEAD TO ABSORB THE BLOW...WHAT DO YOU DO? "ARSENIO HALL'S HMMMMMMMMMM" TO TELL THE TRUTH THE HIT DESEAN JACKSON TOOK WAS WORSE IMO . HE WAS OUT BEFORE HELL FELL BACKWARDS TO THE GROUND. LOOK AT THE REPLAY HE NEVER EVEN PUT A HAND DOWN TO BRACE HIS FALL....HE JUST FELL AND TWITCHED. I WAS LIKE WHOAAAAAAAAAA! NEVER GOOD TO SEE A PERSON TWITCHING.

I agree with both of you I don't want to see anyone get hurt. But how can you regulate what is intentional and what's not? If you can create clear guidelines about hitting then I'm for it. I don't think any fine will ever prevent a dirty hits. Stop wasting time with a fine, only suspensions will do it.
Ever notice on the opening credits of Sunday night football and MNF where they have 2 helmets crashing into each other??? Those credits have been in place for how many years now? Now the NFL wants to ban helmet to helmet hits. Ironic...

It is physically impossible to tackle without leading with your head (unless you trip, and that's illegal too!). All it takes is a slight misjudgement of the other player's speed or direction, or that player's change in direction or speed to cause a helmet to helmet (like Massaquoi ducking into Harrison's helmet). You can't anticipate what the other player is going to do. Both Harrison hits were legal. The Robinson hit on Jackson was legal and vicious (kind of reminded me of the good old days when Donnie Shell roamed the secondary for the Steelers). The Merriweather hit was obviously illegal, as he launched his helmet into Heap. I too played in high school, CB, and never worried about it. But I was smart enough to get my head out of the way.

I really don't see the problem. Most of it was good, hard nosed football the way it's supposed to be played. With these new sissy rules, I think Jack Lambert may be looking to set up a dress shop on NFL.com

They'll be playing touch football next year...

I just don't see how most of those hits can be avoided, is there a way to tackle gently? Like mentioned earlier, at game speed with a guy moving there's no way to absolutely pinpoint the impact of the hit. Injuries are a part of the game and all the players are well aware of that. I hate to see someone laying motionless on the field after a big time hit but I love seeing big time hits. I'm a Cleveland fan, the hit on Massaquoi was a clean and fair hit IMO, yes helmets crashed together but it's not like a helmet to helmet hit when sacking a quarterback who is looking down field and unaware that he's about to get smashed... was the outcome unfortunate... definitely, but it is what it is... FOOTBALL!!!

They'll have them playing in skirts by 2020 :(

It's going to be way to hard to police this policy. Like mentioned Jacksons hit was plain lights out but was a clean hit....it will be interesting to see this all play out.

I think the only time that someone should get fined is when the ball is WAY overthrown and someone just lights up a receiver or if when tackling, especially when upright, and you lead with the helmet, then I think someone should be fined.

As far as James Harrison goes, both his hits were legal! The first hit is very unfortunate because Cribbs ducks trying to avoid contact and Harrison is ducking to tackle him and both collided head first. The second hit was just a HARD CLEAN HIT. Massaquio has the ball and Harrison does his job of laying the lumber. What does the NFL what him to do? a) let him catch the ball, and establish possession? b) watch Massaquio catch it and run a few yards?? I don't get it! I bet Massaquio will think twice to run that same pattern again!! And as a defender that is what you want to do, is make these receiver think TWICE about running through the middle of the field.

Also, who protects the defenders of big hits? I am Skins fan, but how many of you remember when Brandon Jacobs TRUCKED LaRon Landry at Giants Stadium? Or few weeks backs when Ryan Torian TRUCKED the SHEagels safety and ran it in for a touchdown? If the NFL doesn't want any contact, then they should play Golf!! This whole situation is really out of control, if the NFL want no contact than have some swim meets!!!!

Yeah, lots of rules changes from my guys, and I am proud of it! The Blount rule, the Greene rule (head slap, anyone?), even our receivers are too tough for the rest of the league (see the Ward rule -why did he have to break that Bungal's jaw anyway?:))

I think there will soon be a Harrison rule that prevents defenders from making contact with the ball carrier altogether.:D

you are right. funny you said what you said about the running back....as it was explained last sunday on the air....."the running back is NOT a unprotected receiver/player". go figure.

I have seen some of the films of old Bear's games. If Butkus and/or Singletary played today, their entire paychecks would go for fines. Butkus was famous for seperating the ball from the man. Most of the hits he used to do it would be illegal today.

Wait till they take checking out of hockey. If we wanted to be bored, we would watch soccer.
