Petricola are much better in larger groups...starting off with about 6 is best.

That being said if your tank is small you could always get some s. lucipinnis which is a small "dwarf" petricola. I have a group of lucipinnis and love them, and they leave fry alone. Good luck with the hunt.

I have a 40g tank of petricola. They are really interesting in a group of 6 or more. Chase each other around high and low in the tank. Sometimes swim in a 'fish train' in lazy arcs for hours. Sometimes all of them hide and you wonder how so many fish (and they're not so small) could disappear like that.
I would very much like to see s. lucipinnis. Sounds like they would also do well in your tank.

I definitely do not want to get six of them at 6 " each. I have never seen s.lucipinnis in the stores. Does anyone have s.lucipinnis then? I had an Ocellifer that grew to 8 inches and had a huge belly. It was awesome but it did not make the move from WNY. I thought if I go with a smaller cat I could have a little group of them.

I've got 4 synodontis polka dots which look like petricola but aren't schooling fish.
They keep eating my shellie fry so i guess theyre for sale, 4 of em for 40$, thats what i paid for them and I;ve had them for about a month.

I have never seen/heard of s.lucipinnis. I looked online and see they are mini perticolas I do not have room for 6 petricolas so I may have to look for some s. lucipinnis. Does anyone have s. lucipinnis?

I have a group of 11 petricola and man they are so great to watch. I had 3 and started adding to the group and they got funner to watch. Some cool cats.

I have a group of 7 or 8, can't remember exactly until I tear down and clean the tank to get a head count. I bought them as little ones a couple years ago, took that long for them to mature enough to spawn.

I compared mine to species profiles and they look nothing alike. I don't think mine are angelicus they have few spots but they are large (the spots) they are currently only about 1.5" so maybe they just need some growing.

S. ocifeller is a fairly common species with relatively few larger black spots. There have also been some hybrids turning up recently, they're tougher to ID.

polka dot is another name for angelicus... and yes the juvies look a lot different than adults...

I have lucippinis from Dave's Rare Aquatic Fish. They are fabulous! They are fairly small -- around 2" right now. They are better for my small tank than the options. (I used to have multipunctatus and they were fabulous, too.)
