Used CO2 Equipment, Tank and gauges for 40 gallons of planted tanks.[/b]

Are the tanks in the same room? If so, you can use one co2 canister and a manifold to split the output... just a thought. Saves you from buying a plethora of regulators.

DavidG,
You might have some luck finding used stuff in your local paper classified section or Craigs list.
I would look under welding equipment, restaurant supply or beverage/beer supply.

You can also try our local plant club GWAPA their trader section and forum should be helpful. I am a member of GWAPA and welcome you to join the club. GWAPA members can provide you with a wealth of info.

If you buy a used setup there is one thing to be aware of. In order to get the CO2 bottle refilled, it has to have a current hydrotest date on it. Most places that refill are very strict about this!

The test date will be stamped on the bottle near the top it consist of the month and year the test was done(7 06) the bottle can be refilled for 5years from that date. A hydrotest runs about $30-35 per bottle in this area.

A alternative to testing is to buy a bottle from someplace that will swap a full bottle for your empty.(these are usually steel)
Roberts oxygen will do this if you buy one of their bottles(thus you never have to pay for a hydrotest)
Don't do this if you have an aluminum bottle

If you want buy your stuff locally you can pickup a Steel bottle and Regulator from Harbor Freight tools
There are a bunch of places that sell aluminum bottles on line for about $50 they might even ship for free.

You can DIY a bubble counter or buy one. I fill my bubble counter with Fleet® liquid glycerin laxative. Most grocery stores, drugstores or pharmacys have it for about $4. The Glycerine slows the bubbles down making it easier to count and it doesn't evaporate so you fill it once and leave it.

You can get a Solenoid valve locally from Grainger or Clippard minimatic mail order. You can run the solenoid with a PH controller or just plug it into a timer so it runs while you lights are on.

I would suggest getting a low pressure regulator. This will protect your tank from CO2 dump offs (this sometimes happen when your CO2 bottle is about to run out of gas)

Needle valves, check valves and CO2 hose you can get from Clippard. You can get the hose locally at
Tropical Lagoon 301 585-6562 (CO2 hose by the ft.)

Almost no one fills while you wait anymore, so unless you are very patient about it, you are going to be swapping bottles anyhow. I have one place in Frederick that'll fill it if I leave it and come back in a coupla days. Bars by Bud will fill 10 pounds and under in VA. All the rest I know of will only swap.

Now I'll drive Kevin nuts :)

By the time you build one, you can buy a regulator all put together already.

80 bucks. http://www.co2-canisters.com/

By the time you buy a regulator, solenoid, needle valve, bubble counter, and all the miscellaneous parts and pieces to get them to go together (and THIS is the nightmare part of it), you spend just as much - and this way you don't spend 18 hours trying to figure out the parts and connections on clippard's site. It isn't worth it.

This just seems all crazy to me  I'm not a plant person by all means.

Boy am I glad I'm a diver ! Walk in and get a tank filled in no time ! Tanks cheaper, fills cheaper.... of course I don't get co2 though.

I don't know if this applies to c02 tanks.... but you also should look for a visual inspection on a used set-up. Usually done every year.
