Hemichromis guttatus (Jewel cichlid) spawn and fry

The day before we left for a 7 day vacation at Disney World, our Hemichromis guttatus that we got from Prince at a previous CCA meeting laid eggs on a piece of driftwood in our 65g Malawi community tank.

I figured they would make a good "vacation feeder", LOL, but when we came back, there were about two dozen free-swimming fry, and the parents are doing a great job keeping everyone away. In fact, no other fish will go within 10 inches of the fry. It really cracks me up, since the Jewels are probably the smallest fish in the tank (which has yellow labs, cobalt zebras, P. socolofi, Rusty cichlids, and Melanochromis cyaneorhabdus.

It was hard to get pics of the fry with my crappy point and shoot, but here's the best I can manage:

Another H. guttatus spawn

Well, the last Hemichromis guttatus spawn didn't last long in the Malawi community tank, but this pair spawned again, and this time I was able to net out the parents and a bunch of the fry, and put them in their own 10g tank.

Apologies for the lousy pics, but at least you can actually tell there are fry there this time.

More H. guttatus eggs

I was doing a water change on the jewel cichlid tank last night and noticed a bunch of eggs had been laid on the bottom of the tank, in a circle about 2.5" in diameter. Guess I'm going to have to move out the 1st generation of fry before they become food for the parents.

Prince, these are the ones I got from you back in January or so, and I think they're more prolific than guppies, LOL.

Apisto. cacatuoides 'Orange Flash' fry

I hadn't seen the female of my pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides 'Orange Flash' in a while, which appears to mean that she has laid eggs. Yesterday, while doing a water change, I saw her hanging out behind the driftwood in the 90g planted tank they're in, and sure enough, there were a bunch of tiny fry. Hard to count, but maybe a dozen or more.

This is at least the third time this pair has spawned in this tank, and while the survival rate has not been high, I actually sold some of the juvies from the first spawn at the big PVAS auction a few weeks ago.

The fry are so small, it's nearly impossible to take a picture that actually shows them (especially with my cruddy point-n-shoot), but I recently got an iPhone, so I thought I'd try a video posted to YouTube. Let's see if I can figure out how to embed the video:
[YT]<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wEdmF7zr-VQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wEdmF7zr-VQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>[/YT]

Hey, that worked! Woo-hoo, my first YouTube! The best view of the fry seems to be about 38 seconds in.
