Tang Suggestion

Well I had to get an emergency 55 gallon tank.

Short version of long story:

75 gallon tank in living room sprang a leak on the canister filter spewing 40 gallons of water on living room carpet/transfer all fish and remaining water to emergency 55/take down 75 to allow carpet to dry out.

Now I am ready to set up the 55 as a new tank and looking for tang suggestions. I have nothing in the tank right now, so open to any suggestions.

Thank you,

Since I know nothing about tangs, other than what I have read on some forums how many of the calvus and Paracyp Nigripinnis would work in a 55? how about a 40 breeder?

I'm pretty new to Tangs, but I believe a 55 would house 1-2 adult pairs of calvus/comps and a fairly large group of paracyps.... 12 or so.

Alternatively, 1 pair of calvus/comps and 1 pair of julidochromis would probably also work with the paracyps. You'll need to set up separate rock piles so that the rock dwellers can have separate territories.

You may be able to get away with the same thing in a 40, but I believe it will be more tricky as the length of the 4' length of the tank and height will be appreciated more than the 18" depth of the 40 B will be.

There are so many things you can do with a 55 and tangs. Really it's endless...

What one fish do you "have" to have.... then I'll make some suggestions around that.

My personal preferance for a 4 foot tank. Sand Sifters :)

I actually like both the Paracyp Nigripinnis and the calvus but if I had to pick one it would be the calvus ( yellow by the way)

You could actually do both of those.... and certain sand sifters if you like them :)

In a 55 I'd shoot for three groups of fish :)

Could Paracyps and Callochromis work together?
Paracyps and Xeno's?

If John chooses Calvus does he limit himself to other Tangs, including many of the sand sifters?

I have a 55 Tang Tank with a quad of calvus, 12 Leleupi, 1 Juli, 2 Brichardi, 1 Chalinachromis Brichardi. The tanks works great. I love watching. The Leleupi breed non stop. They end up eating most of their babies tho.

I have some Julidichromis Marlieri 1-1.5 inch for $2 each if you want them. I have 10 or so left. I also have some Brichardi about the same size you can have for the same.

Thanks everyone.

One more question before I move forward with this ( he says knowing that there is probably a lot more questions coming).

With the calvus I have read one profile that says they are shell spawning and another that says cave spawning.

I look at the size of the fish and think no way shell spawning but I guess its possible. The question is which is it? cave or shell?

Most of the altolamps you see are the larger "normal" variety that are cave dwellers (6" max for males). There is one type that stays much smaller - maxes out around 2.5"-3" called Altolamp. sp. "Comp Shell." I don't think you see them too often around here.

They like narrow spaces which only the female is skinny enough to fit in between. At least that's what I've been able to find out. You can go out and buy these toaster-like looking caves or the really large shell but I'm not sure its necessary. There are more experienced peeps here than I. Also I'm pretty sure that Calvus getting bigger than Compressiceps. That might influence your decision.

Agreed! Although, I just scored seven of the Sumbu Bay :jumpy: and I had a hell of a time finding them. I am still looking for more....

In the wild calvus and comps are rock dwellers. They get to the same size.

There are shell dwelling comps in the wild as well.... they stay smaller.

In the aquarium.. they will use shells. Most well known breeders use whelk shells for spawning them.

Peter Rubin of Atlantis uses large shells to breed his. As a matter of fact when you go into his facility you will fine almost all of his Calvus Breeders inside their shells.
I think a trip up to his facility is in the making for this Winter.:D

Guess I'm a well known breeder then, eh?? :D

Sarah is right, the comps and calvus that I've bred (now Sarah has my wild yellow calvus... and the female's favorite shell!!) all bred in the whelk shells I got from a friend in Massachusettes years ago.

The dwarf compressiceps, like what Shawn is talking about, also use shells in the aquarium. Shawn picked up my last two males, and the shell that the female of the group had used to breed in. An apple snail shell as I recall!

Of course you are :D

I use shells for all types of tangs.... not just comps/shellies...

Anyone that has been to my fishroom, has seen the amount of shells. All types.... my favorite, conch shells :) They work for most egg layers.
