I stumbled upon a kent marine ro/di unit for a reasonable price.

My question is, for those of you out there that use ro water, why?
Don't most fish adjust to local water conditions, especially if you are getting your fish from others in your same area.
What are the benefits of having/using ro water?
Is this more useful for saltwater tanks? wild caught freshwater fish?
some other reason?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I used to use ro/di on my planted tank. I could control what was in the water and ensure I wasn't overdosing a fert. I also noticed it looked cleaner than my tap and significantly cut down on algae issues. It required my guest bathroom be off limits because the water was housed in a large garbage can. A few months after getting married, my wife reclaimed the bathroom and I sold the system.
