Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae spawn

My Victorian Mouthbrooders (Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae) finally spawned again!

I have the pair in a 20 long with some Steatocranus. The female is quite small but has spawned several times now. I've tried to let her hold but she always eats the eggs. So this time I watched her for a bit and then stripped her yesterday. The eggs appear to be good as I'm already seeing a little bit of differentiation in the developing eggs. I often worry about that when I have a female that won't hold. Seems not to be the case here.

Congrats! I've wanted to give these guys a shot for a while, just never had the tank space to dedicate to them.

Great job - these are nice little fish!

I had pretty good luck with the females holding to term. When I'd see a female with a mouthful, I'd put her in a net breeder with a tube for cover.

It's amazing how many babies a little female can hold. It's also amazing how quickly the fry grow. Nearly breeding size in <6 months!

Good to know, Matt! I really like these fish. Gorgeous color from the males. I'm going to assume this female is an anomaly. I've tried her in a net breeder with a tube and she still freaks and eats the eggs. A Marina hang-on tank box is even worse since she's "outside" the tank and even more exposed. I stuffed one full of subwassertang once to give her a lot of cover and she did finally spit fry, but they didn't do well in that setup.

Stripping a fish this small takes really steady hands and a teeny tiny tongue-depressor to very very gently hold her mouth open (I use the rounded end of the smallest size zip-tie).

Interesting stuff. My rainbow's laid eggs on a rock yesterday morning; mom and pop watched over them during the day, but the eggs were gone this morning. It's a very busy tank. Happened day after 50% water change.
